48X slower than 40X on VS02 / VS01 FW

It seems that many people are getting burn times of
2:53 for 48X burns and
2:45 for 40X burns
on their 40125S drives with VS01 / VS02 firmware.

If someone has a "real" 48125W drive, please let us know if it's the same.

Test conditions:
Nero 5.5.8.2 with 80min of data burned on a CD. (Smart-Burn enabled)

If the quality of the media is less than perfect it will slow down during the write process even if you selected 48X writing.

I tried it with writing as well as simulation.
Since during simulation no actual data is written (nor tested) media quality will not make any difference.
The database of VS02 shows my media (TDK 40X Ritek Type7) as capable of 48X

Don’t know why but CD-R disc quality also affects simulating.

Here is when doing a Write simultaion with Nero CD-Speed, still media quality forced the drive to step down to 32X for a while and then speed up again.

That simulation doesn’t make any sense.
How can a drive judge the quality of the media when nothing is being written…especially in your case where it goes down to 32X and then jumps back to 40X.

If you have the “real” 48125W, please do the 48X vs 40X burn test and let us know the results (time) (use Mode2/XA with 79+min of actual data)

Yes, my Samsung 16x Ritek Type 7 was writable @ 40x with VS01 but now with VS02 is writable @ 48x.

I may have figured out why 48X often take longer than 40X burns.
When burning in Mode2/XA it seems that the buffer may not be able to handle the amount of data flowing through it:
