Hi folks ...
I just bought my new 4163B and I am confused at the drive's writing strategy (or should I say strategies) ... from what I have read in the reviews, it uses P-CAV (for 16x writing, that is) and I just created a test disc with Nero (RICOHJPNR02 8x @ 12x max.) and the write speed graph showed Z-CLV ... is that really true ?
Yep, that is the same behavior for me. Z-CLV for 12x, P-CAV for 16x. I think it uses P-CAV for 12x on 16x media though, confusing.
Here is a typical 12x burn in GSA-4163B. It's Zone CLV. YUDEN000T02 at 16x.
Typical 16x burn. MCC004 at 16x.
Ricoh R03 @ 12x
Ah. I was right about 16x media at 12x, good to know.
Funny, I cannot get CDSpeed to restrict my LG 4163 to 12x for 16x media (I have 3 different types of 16x media).
No problem doing so for NEC 3500 and Philips 1640.
No one can.
Insert a blank DVD, open CDSpeed, set it to "use current write speed", set the desired speed using cdrecord-prodvd, and then press F9
Typo. I meant to say YUDEN000T02 at 12x. :o
You were right. Starting at 7.x speed just like in 16x P-CAV burn.
11.17x for 12x burn seems to be very fast.
It's faster than a lot of other drives at 16x
8x writing on 16x +R media is also P-CAV
