411s and Infodisc

I just bought a Lite-On 411s and 100 DVD-R marked as:
“DVD-R 4X Infodisc Printable”. The burner worked fine with the RW and +R that came with it, and although I’ve heard some brands may result in the drive only writing at 1X or so, I can’t even get the writer to SEE these DVD’s. Anyone else had this problem or know what to do? I didn’t think I bought crappy media, and surely not it wouldn’t even be seen by the writer.

/Miffed newbie.

I actually managed to read ONE of the discs, here’s the info I got usingn DVD Decrypter, I hope that’s what I am to use, sorry if not

Remember, the SEARCH
Looks like you’ve got some pretty questionable media there.

  • Latest firmware. (first thing I did)
  • Windows XP Pro Eng SP1
Tried Nero 6 and RecordNOW 4.5
IDE is Secondary Master, and it’s running as Ultra DMA 2 - Ultra33.

Burning the DVD+RW and the DVD+R that came with the drive works.

Here’s all the info I gathered, using DVD Decrypter, K’s Probe and DVD Info:

Huston… we have a problem!

-You are not running Nero InCD and RecordNow DLA at same time?
-Not Nvidia chipset?

[BTW,a hell of a DVD-R:
Blank Disc Capacity : 268,238,848 Sectors = 523,904.0 MB = 511.63 GB]

Typical 411S prob. Your 100 DVD-R are NOT supported by the Firmware in 411S, as it looks right now.

Bottomline; Try to get “media code” on some other computer/ DVD-rewritable and contact one of our Mods -OC-Freaks-. He has a long list with incompatible DVD-Rs for Lite-On folks.

And you, dont worry, the shops are open tomorrow. Buy and test some Memorex or Maxell.

I did run both Nero and RecordNOW (4.5) at the same time but I removed them both to make sure it wasn’t causing conflicts (meaning, removing them both to run all these diagnostic tools) are you sure it’s only incompatibility? I mean only 1 out of 20-30 even get detected by the drive.

And yes I’m calling the company to give them heat over this tomorrow. Unfortunately I live in upper buttcreek that has really lousy computer stores, I’ll see if I can buy just a few and test.

Right now I’m looking at the store where I got these homepage, and I seem to be stuck with either

DVD-R 4X Datawrite Red 4.7GB 100-pack 16.5kr/st
or
DVD-R 2X Bulkpaq Gen4 (Prodisc) 4.7GB 100-pack 8.1kr/st

(prices being SEK, Swedish currency)

Any suggestion? They’re both Princo, that much I know.

Where can I find an incompatibilitity list for the Lite-On you said? attacks the search function

Ye,
Princo can be “good” and REALY bad.
BTW, I use Princo “4XH69xxxxxxx…” with no problem (-R 4X)

[There is a lot to learn in this bussines. I myself purchased 411S sex weeks ago. And ones for sure; this forum is great. You are never alone with your probs.!]

Oh yes, back to Princo…

-This stated by OC-Freak. [forums “guru”]
"25% of the princos on the market is acceptable
50% is bad
25% is coasters even before writing to them.

Best bet is to stay away from prico and get some better discs, the
Lite-On is quite happy with ritek and cmc.magnetics DVD-R and they are not that expensive.
But on princos in the acceptable group the Lite-On is one of the better writers for princo discs
Most discs in the acceptable group have a serial number starting with 4X-??? or 4XM???.
Most discs with 4XH??? and 4XB??? goes into the bad group and a few in the coasters group as well as a few in the acceptable group.
Princos starting with H??? or M??? in the serial no goes mostly into the coaster group."

New media codes in FS0F:

DVD-R:

SONY08D1
GSC002
Yi Jhan 001
MBI 01RG20
ONIDTECH
VDSP_SAB 01
AN32
AN31
POSG04
RITEKM02

DVD+R:

MAXELL 002
LONGTEN 002
GSC502 002

Been looking for OC-Freaks list, but cant find it rigt now. Its a good idea to search for his posts.

If it’s the new datawrite redtop v2 - don’t buy them!! they are made by infosmart and not supported by the Lite-On.

If it’s the older datawrite redtop v1 - they are princo and usually in the “acceptable” quality group to my experience - in other words: An ok choice but not the best.

The bulkpaq discs made by prodisc should be ok though (but only 2X).

Personally I’ll recommend DVD-R media from these manufacturers for the Lite-On:

CMC Magnetics
Ritek
Taiyo Yuden
Mitsubishi Chemicals
BeALL

Or princo if you get the right type

I got two new batches of princo in with a different looking serialno:

4XPB???-??? and 4XB???-???

Notice the “-” in the serial no - never had princos with such a serial number before.

And they are good to my first experience

Nvidia chipset

When you mean that, does a nVidia graphics card count?

No, he means it as in a motherboard chipset. Nforce 1, 2 or 3.
