Edit: A FAQ about this non-working "Polish upgrade"...
Q: Can I get 8x -R?
Go buy a 812S.
Q: But what about the _51S@812S firmware found on the "Polish" site?
A: You can crossflash to a 812S firmware. But 8x -R won't work. You'll get 4x -RW, but not 8x -R. If you try to burn -R at 8x, what will happen is that your burner will try to upshift from 4x to 6x, but this upshift will fail. Once it fails, the burner usually will continue the rest of the burn at 4x (either that, or abort). In other words, you can flash it to a 812S firmware, but
you won't get what you're looking for (8x -R)
. (you will, however, get 4x -RW, but who actually cares about that?)
Q: What about _11S@812S?
A: No, it doesn't work at all. I've been told by someone who tried this that you can't even read discs (much less write them) if you do this. So don't even think about it.
Q: I am currently using this so-called "Polish" mod for _51S@812S. I want to upgrade to a newer firmware like US0N. Can I?
A: No. You can crossflash to a 812S firmware, only if it's US05 or earlier. With the later 812S firmwares, not only will you not get 8x -R, you won't get any DVD-burning abilities, period! This is another reason why this is discouraged, because you're forced to use an old firmware.
Q: What about the _51S@U18A that was talked about by C0deKing some time ago?
A: This suffers from the same problem of 8x -R not working. It's also around the same age as US05, which is why the crossflash works. Supposedly, a few people think that this firmware gives them better 4x -R results. If you feel like trying this, there is a special firmware named GSU1 that is based on the UYS1 firmware. Like all other firmwares based on the 812S family, 8x -R doesn't work on GSU1, either (in fact, we disabled 8x -R completely so that people won't accidentally try to burn at it and get a failure).
Q: What about the 832S? I want dual-layer for my 451S/851S.
A: If the _51S@812S doesn't really work (except with older firmwares, in which case, it only partially works), then what makes you think that the 832S would work, especially since it's a much newer firmware? Of course, people are indeed very curious, and someone actually did try to crossflash a 451S to a 832S. The result was that the drive was unable to burn any DVDs at all until it was reverted back to a 451S. So it didn't work.
Q: Any hope for the future?
A: As you can see from the rest of the posts in this thread, "Team Zebra" tried to get it to work, but they had given up on this back in April. At the time of writing this FAQ, that was 2 months ago... but... well, "never say never"...
End edit... (added by c64k)
FYI ladies & gents:
'Team Zebra' was heard to mention:
Topic of the day: 451S@812S is NOT by our people - it does NOT WORK correctly. LEAVE IT ALONE!
As of the writing of this post the mod is only half finished and not working properly on most drives. We strongly recommend waiting rather then using a half finished mod and risking your drive and wasting your media.
The same thing happened with the original method to go fom 411S to 811S (Polish method). People who waited experienced much less trouble/headaches in the long run.
When I hear more I will let you know.
- Another edit: despite the mod not working and giving people the 8x -R that everyone has so long been itching for, it's actually a fairly safe one. Just as safe as 451S@851S in that it can't damage your drive and it shouldn't adversely affect the EEPROM. As a result, I've edited out the warnings that used to be here... (c64k)
