Samsung started mass production of 24-layer V-NAND in August 2013. Plan for 32-layer mass production is set for later this year. Cost reduction from switch to 24-layer is small while it will be much different with 32-layer and beyond. That is the primary reason why V-NAND is not taking the majority market share yet. 3-D NAND is not a Samsung proprietary technology. But the market is at the moment a virtual Samsung monopoly. What that Trend Force reporter actually meant must be that Samsung’s competitors will begin mass production in 2014 or 2015.
