3550A+ritek -rDL = Illegal disc on nero 7

Hey all, finally got arround to trying to burn DL media when I saw some ritek -R DLs for $2 each… Shortly after buying the media I discovered the need to upgrade to nero 7 to recognize the media. Did that. Tried a test burn, received an Illegal disc error upon initiation of the burn. Thought it was possibly a PXHELP20.SYS error, so I removed it, renamed it and tried again (attached log shows this to keep down the disable pxhelp comments) It burns fine on -R SL prodiscs at 8x (even with pxhelp enabled.) See attached nero log and thanks for any help:

Buy cheap media and you will pay twice in the end!

This cannot be -R DL media because it were tested at 2.4x!

PS: Please don’t post serials.

When a drive does not accept a disc at all (and this is likely to happen for Ritek DL), it might return wrong write speed descriptors.

Agreed, and from the log it seems that Nero 7 has another nasty bug here.

Trust me it’s -R DL. So, my plan is to see if imgburn works with the -R Dl (hopefully it is just a nero 7 error), Else maybe I’ll just exchange these 25 for 15 verbatum +R DLs)

Sorry about the serial, spent too long staring at a computer screen aparently.
Cheers

Could you maybe use Nero CD DVD Speed and post what it outputs for the media?

That I can do  It’ll be a couple more hrs since I’m not at the computer. Additionally, I went ahead and upgraded nero 7 to the latest version (7.0.1.4 from 1.2, perhaps that also fixes the bug.) Will report more once I wander back home. BTW, love the klingon google page(s)

However, even when opening a 2gb iso file in Imgburn, it reports that it can not burn to this disc, Incompatible Format (I/O error)

I have a feeling that will not change if the ISO file is dual layer, but we’ll see. (Will report back once I test that.)

No change with a 2 layer ISO. As such these discs are now on their way back to meritline, and in a week or two I’ll have some verbatims to try. Color me annoyed.

Oh, also for anyone else that isn’t using the latest version of anydvd, if you upgrade nero to 7.1.4 you will have to upgrade anydvd to work (or possibly reinstall anydvd, I just upgraded as it was easier then tracking down the older version install files.

Yeah, pity that they are not supported yet.

PS: Yeah, those Klingons are everywhere.

Final update, burned successfully with a verbatum +R DL. (Just in case anyone had any lingering doubts that it could have been the drive.) Pitty, but I guess for now it’s $3/pop media.

Hi there,

I always say:

Media is like a hooker, you don’t always want to get the cheapest

I am 100% sold on Taiyo Yuden media (Single Layer) and when I try Dual Layer media (Still too expensive, haven’t even burned one in my life yet) it will be Verbatim DVD+R DL all the way

Verbatim, and Maxell made in Japan are also very good media based on people in forums, but never bought some !

My 2 cents…
