3540A will burn CD's error on DVD's

CD, DVD and (Ultra HD) Blu-ray Writers NEC / Optiarc Writer

Hello!

I’m new to this forum and fairly new to burning DVD’s (2 months).

Have a NEC 3540A (from NewEgg) in black. Version 1.01

Running XP SP2, gig Ultra ram, AMD XP 64 3400, dual WD 160gig 7200 spin striped @ 320 gig, Asus board, VIA chipset.

Using Nero 7 and now 1Click DVD Copy.

Have copied approx. 15 DVDs with no issues, using Memorex 16x DVD-R with no problems until now. Tried various DVD’s in the 100 stack with same results.

I’m now unable to burn a DVD (both proggies) but CD’s burn fine and verify. Same laser?

Please help! Might be a bad unit or a driver issue but it burned fine a few days ago.

I’ve included both the Nero Recode error log and CD-DVD Speed log.

I read that earlier (videohelp.com) shortly after I purchased them, but find it odd that I was able to make 15+ DVD’s with no errors.

I honestly think that my burner took a dump, but am curious as to why it can still burn a CDR?

that’s because cd and dvd have different lasers and each one can go bad independently.
but make some more checking and testing before you decide it’s gone bad(another pc,another media etc.)

I am planning on removing all traces of both burning software and trying again as documented here.

If that doesn’t work, I’ll re-install windows and give it another go (after using Windows for years, not that big of a deal!)

If neither of these fix the drive, I’ll deem it bad.

Anyhthing else I can do in the meantime?

An update:

Nothing seemed to work so I re-formatted XP and re-installed on Sunday.

Appears to be fine as I burned two DVD’s Sunday night and will try two more tomorrow night.

Just wish I knew what happened so that I can prevent it in the future!

I had my last install of XP for nearly a year (that’s a LONG TIME for M$!).

In the last 45 days I’ve done quite a few upgrades and have had to install numerous times. Blah!

Just for the book, you cannot (re)format XP, you can (re)format an harddisk. :wink:

Did you use the same batch/media?

Have you performed a quality scan with them and what is the result?

chef - I wish I could re-format XP and make it better! Thinking of switching to Longhorn after a few more betas…

I’m starting to think the burning issue that I had is caused by Nero 7. I have the original release and they now have a 300+ mb “update” available. Sounds like a comprehensive re-write to me!

After re-installing XP, I could burn but Nero became VERY picky telling me that most of the blank DVD’s couldn’t be written. I also noticed that it caused “glitches” in audio cd’s in both burners (NEC & Memorex 52x CDR). Burned the same cd with the NEC using Roxio EZ 8 Studio and sound is perfect.

I have “access” to a newer rip of Nero that I may try or I’ll just re-format (the drive) again and go without Nero 7.

More and more issues with Nero 7, apparently. :doh: It’s at least the 10th user issue I read in two weeks! :eek:

i had two of the same burners in my machine that started giving me the same trouble. I took them out and installed in different machines and they have been fine for about 2 months now. I use nero 6 ultra on all 3 machines installed from the same disk, so i didn’t think it was a nero issue, but a windows one.
