2500A install went ok, now the trouble begins

Nero 6 keeps saying it cant load

wnaspi32.dll

so only image recording is available.

I downloaded that specific file from the Nero site for my Windows (ME)

installed files in the correct folders and now Nero loads doesnt give me the error message but wont let me burn anything besides an image.

the drive isnt even listed under my device manager and I know thats one problem, I just dont know how to solve it.

I got my drive from the newegg sale and didnt receive any software discs.

What all should I have done once I took out the old Sony burner and put in the new NEC. I just figured it was plug and play, boy as I wrong. Can any1 help this newbie plz?

Update to the latest version of Nero. Is it retail Nero or did you get it with another drive?

Retail version and it is the latest.

Well Nero isn’t going to be happy until windows shows the drive in device manager. This is a well know problem with win9x.
Things to check:-
Is the bios set up as Auto for the ide channel it’s on?
Is the device “posting” properly. Some atapi devices appear not post in a manner which leaves them able to respond to the win9x driver. You can solve this one by installing a Dos cd driver in the config.sys (without the mscdex in autoexec). The windows driver will be quite happy to take over from the dos driver as long as mscdex isn’t installed.

how do I set the BIOS up for Auto IDE on?

I missed the fact that Windows doen’t see the drive. I’ll bet it’s not jumpered properly for it’s IDE assigment.
Where is the drive placed and how is it jumpered?
As I recall, my 2500 came jumpered as slave.

To tell u the truth I have no idea what jumpered means but Id guess it means something to do with the cables I unplugged from the Sony burner (my bottom drive) and plugged into the NEC burner. Didnt see any slave and master switches on the drive tho.

OK, that’s the problem then, and easy to fix.
The ribbon cable has 2 connectors, which one is the NEC connected to? If it’s the end one, then it should probably be set to master. On the back of the drive are a set of 8-12 pins with a small jumper on 2 of the pins. On top of the drive, on the label, is a key that tells you where to put the jumper for “master”.

YES!!! problem fixed. both were set to master so I made the NEC the master and top DVD drive the slave, just burned an audio cd at 32x and it worked wonderfully. My weekend is complete.

My weekend is complete

Um, maybe you need to get out more?

Glad it’s working…enjoy.
