20A1H always burns at a slow speed

#1

just got a new 20a1h, applied the codeguys LLO6-fb-eos firmware and am burning (with the latest nero) a full dvd at a blazing 14 minutes (not counting data verification).

dvd media is rated at 16x, but no matter what i set the burning speed at somewhere in the neighborhood of 13 minutes is the fastest burn i can achieve.

what gives?

Have you checked UDMA to see if it’s enabled? Jumpers are set correctly?

#3

jumpered as master.

checked the ide controller in device manager and its current transfer mode is udma4.

#4

What about other media. Do you have anything else to try?

#5

How about a CDSpeed burn graph? Would give us an idea what is going wrong for you.

#6

just found a couple of ritek discs, speed was a little better… 15 minutes to burn and verify vs. 20.

however, its my understanding from reading the thread that it should matter what media i’m using with the firmware patches and smartburn.

i’ve never done one before, but do have nero speed so i can. do i do it with a blank dvd?

i need to step out for a bit but will do it when i get back in a couple of hours.

btw, thanks for the almost instantaneous assistance!

#8

Well with Smartburn on it might be slowing down the burn speed as the discs might be crappy. Post an image of Nero CD/DVD Speed of a Create Disc burn.

#9

is this what you needed?

#10

Yes. I had a 18A1P that all it would do is burn at 6X speed for any brand of disc. I would suggest sending/taking it back and get a replacement if you can. You voided warranty by flashing to modified firmware.

#11

Looking at your graph shows a very high CPU load. What other programs have you got running in the background?

#12

nothing other than browser. i’ve also tried to burn on a fresh reboot after killing all non essential processes and i still get the same crappy burn times.

#13

Your 84% CPU load indicated DMA is off. Run cdspeeds burst transfer speed test, you need a data disk in the drive to run it. The speed should be higher than 23 MB/sec.

#14

in the device manager i show the ide channel that this drive is on as operating in udma4.

is there another place i should check to see whether or not dma is on or off for this drive?

#15

Just run the cdspeed burstrate test. It will show us if DMA is really working.

#16

burst test results:

#17

Yep same kind of scans i had. I just don’t know what to tell you. I’d like to know the answer.

#18

Is this in Vista, geleeze, or are you just using a Vista skin? CPU Usage shows there’s a problem on your system. Your burner is known for burning @6X after a LightScribe session also.

#19

not vista, xp pro. i tried the drive in another box and didnt get that great of an improvement.

haven’t used the lightscribe feature yet at all.

does it go back to burning over 6x after a lightscribe session? i dont have to have lightscribe, just thought it would be neat if i ever wanted to use it. i’d be just as happy with the comperable non lightscribe drive if it meant not dealing with a temperamental burner.

#20

The 3 i’ve had have been temper mental and they did not have LS. I’ve tried everything including fresh install of XP Pro and cannot seem to get these drives working. The one i have now 20A1P burns great but looks bad on TRT tests. The same disc plays fine in my set-tops and quality scans look good. DVD-RAM discs work good with it. Will only read 8X +R discs bitset to DVD-ROM at 12X instead of 16X. I would really like to have this drive fully functional.
