2011 saw Blu-ray Disc making gains & Netflix faltering.

Netflix made the poor decision to significantly raise their prices over the summer causing frustrated customers and plummeting stock prices. That move by Netflix appears to have driven some customers to alternate streaming media solutions or even back to (or staying with) disc based media.

Best Buy had blue ray movies ranging anywhere from $1 - $10 for newish releases… when you combine that with the fact that NetFlix slapped consumers in the face there is no surprise that this would be the outcome. Stand-alone blue ray players and recorder for computers reached a milestone of $50 which is also the explanation for the uptick in consumers for the media. These gains are a psychologial hit with consumers who actually have disposable incomes. For the rest of the consumer base streaming will be their choice, however netflix won’t be the primary consumer’s choice anymore. After raising prices they crossed a line by changing the terms of service so much that alternatives look much better… even for the moment, blue ray…
