1693S CD Burning Quality?

I just got a 1693S and gave away my lite-on 48x CD burner. Then I read the 1673S review about how poor CD burning quality is on that drive. Since the 1693S is basically the same drive I’d like to know if anyone has tested the 1693 to see if firmware or anything has helped as I still do CD’s for programs, kids music etc. It sure sucks I gave my good 48x away but I wanted to keep my 16X DVD (166S) to make DVD copying easier and they needed a burner of some kind.

I’ve been geting good CD-R Burns on my 1693s  , but until now I’ve only used Verbatim discs. I now have a pack of Ritek discs, but haven’t used them yet. And it burns CD-RW much better than my 832s that died  .

I have some Memorex disks that must be junk. Tried Durabrand cheapo’s and they are much better. Doing some tests in nero speed test and it looks a lot better. That review of the 1673S will scare a guy. My 48x was just great. I used it to learn what all this quality stuff was about.

In Nero CD-DVS speed, in the Disc Info Tab, you can see who is the (real)maker of the CD-Rs (just curious of who made those memorex discs).

The info tab didn’t say but CDR Identifier said the following:

ATIP: 97m 32s 19f
Disc Manufacturer: Prodisc Technology Inc.
Reflective layer: Dye (Short strategy; e.g. Phthalocyanine)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 702.82MB (79m 59s 71f / LBA: 359846)

Prodisc is good. Most of the today’s Verbatim (not DataLife/DataLife+/Pastel/Azo) have its ATIP on their CD-Rs. I get good results with them.
But don’t even try to burn your CDs at 48x, not with that drive. 24x-32x will be all right.

:iagree:

I’ve had very good burns with Prodisc CD-Rs (on both burners in my sig), burned at 16x for audio, and 32x for data.

Yes, its my drive…that is what I was asking, anyone improved the CD write quality?

There have been a number of firmwares released since the 48x cd writing problem was discovered. I don’t know whether any of the firmwares has solved the problem with 48x cd writing, but even back then 40x was good.

The 1693S is a very good cd burner up to 40X. I am burning all my CDs with it and never got any troubles!!

I’m using KS0B firmware and I guess I can make do. It is just that my 40x12x48 (40125S) was flashed to 48x and rocked. So to answer the question has the firmware fixed it yet? NO, at least not up to KS0B. 40x it is then…

Just burned a DVD at 16x on the following media labeled Fujifilm 1x -16x at bestbuy for $14.99. It plays in my Apex 1010W:

I have some questions about Cd-R burning.

I heard that DVD-RW drive shouldn’t use to scan Cd-R disc (I use my 1693S to scan Cds but there is No PIF shown in the results  ), do I better use my Cd-Rw drive to scan ?

And about the results, I know that PI<280 and PIF<4 is good DVD but what about Cd ?

I hope this is not Off-Topic since it relate to 1693s and Cd burning results.

The only CD-R’s I am haviung any trouble with is the Verbatim that come from CMCmag…they aren’t doing it. Every 2nd or 3rd doesn’t want to load or burn. I should have known better…but they were CHEAP…ha ha.

On a CD you have C1 and C2 errors. From what I’ve read 10 C1 errors and no C2 errors are pretty good (actually it said you shouldn’t have ANY C2 errors at all or you have a problem). As for scanning a CD in a DVD-RW I don’t know. It may be that these drives read them easier and therefore do not give a true result like a plain vanilla CD-ROM. Here is a review of the 1673S which is basically a 1693S jr.
Take a look here for CD burning info: http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/194/4

Well I use 1673S @ 1693 with KC4B FW and burn only CD-RW. It is quite a good burner on all CD-RW except low quality media with Fornet, Ricoh ATIP on that isn’t able to give any readable burns ever. Good burns are with CMC ATIP media (Verbatim, Imation, Philips, TDK brands) and the best ones for this drive are InfoDisc ATIP media (Memorex, Samsung brands). I haven’t used any TY media since there aren’t reachable here (Central Europe).
