165H6S can only read but not write DVD-RAM?!

According to Golem news and after having a look at the specifications on the Liteon site it appears that the 165H6S can only read DVD-RAM, but not write!

Quite strange given the fact that it is a 165 drive and that the 165P6S can write at 5x.

Does anyone know anything about that, because that means I wont wait for the H6, but buy a P6 instead.

liteon list the specs as follows

16x 8x 8x / 16x 6x 4x / 5X / 16x / + 48x 24x 48x

This is what the specs of the H6 say:

DVD Family : Write DVD+R 16x ( 21600 KB/sec ) maximum by CAV
DVD+R9 8x ( 10800 KB/sec ) maximum by Z-CLV
DVD-R 16x ( 21600 KB/sec ) maximum by CAV
DVD-R9 4x ( 5400 KB/sec ) maximum by CLV
ReWrite DVD+RW 8x ( 10800 KB/sec ) by CLV
DVD-RW 6x ( 8100 KB/sec ) by CLV
Read 16x ( 21600 KB/sec ) maximum by CAV
Access time 160 ms

CD Family : Write CD-R 48x ( 7200 KB/sec ) maximum by CAV
ReWrite CD-RW 24x ( 3600 KB/sec ) maximum by Z-CLV in UltraSpeed disc
Read 48x ( 7200 KB/sec ) maximum by CAV
Access time 160 ms

DVD-RAM 5X PCAV

Compared to the specs of the P6:

DVD Family : Write DVD+R 16x ( 21600 KB/sec ) maximum by CAV
DVD+R9 8x ( 10800 KB/sec ) maximum by Zone CLV
DVD-R 16x ( 21600 KB/sec ) maximum by CAV
DVD-R9 4x ( 5400 KB/sec ) maximum by CLV
DVD-RAM 5X(6750KB/sec) maximum by PCAV
ReWrite DVD+RW 8x ( 10800 KB/sec ) by CLV
DVD-RW 6x ( 8100 KB/sec ) by CLV
Read 16x ( 21600 KB/sec ) maximum by CAV
Access time 160 ms

Notice how the specs of the P6 state DVD-Ram in the “Write” section, while the H6 has an own section saying nothing about writing.

And like I wrote, Golem states that it has only 5x read capability for DVD-Ram. Let’s just hope that’s not true. Nevertheless I wont wait for the answer and just buy me the P6.

Hi guys.

The SHM-165H6S both reads and writes DVD-RAM:

Hope it helps!

z.

Good to know, because even the firmware page says “Super AllWrite Firmware” for the 165P6S only, while for the 165H6S it reads “DVD Dual Firmware” like with the 160 drives. Quite confusing if you ask me.

wow, even rights HD dvd’s ! to bad they are not out yet :frowning:

lol, don’t count on that what you see.
Surely it does not write on HD-DVD or even Blu-Ray.

I think, it’s correct drive info:

Yes. That is correct. Pay careful attention to the fact that I blur out the firmware, for a good reason. The unit I probe information from - and the resulting firmware were never meant for public consumption, hence certain features “appear” when they may not be present in retail hardware probes.

Hehe, very interesting!
