1620, Burns Keep Failing

I have a 1620 with the latest official firmware. It worked fine burning Data discs for a while to some cheap windata dvd-r’s I got. I wanted to start burning some movies so went ahead and got some philips 1-8x dvd+r. I also upgraded the firmware at this point to take advantage of qsuite 2 and the booktype changing. Now as soon as the burn is supposed to start, be it data or movie, Nero always says the burn fails. Below is a simple data burn at 16x

Lower burn speed to match the media.

this sometimes happens to me. reboot then try it

From the log: Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR) = BAD MEDIA and your 1620 doesn’t like it.

Download DVD Identifier and check the media code of your Philips DVD+R. Please report back.

The Nero Log was for the Windata ones, and it speed tested at 16x

  1. Can you tell us if there’s any Made In Japan on the Windata label/spindle/case? I know some windata is Made in Hongkong.
  2. Check the windata “TYG02” media if there’s any serial number. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?p=1139848#post1139848
  3. Try burning with the CMCMAG.E01 (Philips brand).

I threw away the packaging for the Windata’s a while ago. All I could find on them were these 2 label
IFPI FW13 and 307R

narmenia in the other (linked) thread shows 307T. This is probably not a real TYG02 if the media doesn’t have the GG000xxx serial number.

The drive should burn CMCMAG.E01 without any problem (although maybe not as good as real TYG02). If you experience lead-in error, my other suggestion is to check DMA and make sure your drive is in UDMA2 mode.
