160P6S vs. Ritek S04 vs. firmware

I bought a spindle of 50 Memorex DVD+R DL discs which are actually Ritek S04 branded as Memorex. They are supposed to be 8x discs.

The things will absolutely not work in my SHW-160P6S burner. The thing has been faithful and robust and would probably attempt to write to a bagel if I could fit it in here. My laptop TSST L632D burner works just fine with the S04 discs.

I fired up Nero’s disc info software and got this result from the 160P6S:

Nero CD-DVD Speed: Disc Info

As you can see, there is no write speed information coded in the firmware, or, Ritek S04 is not in the firmware at all. I am currently using PS0C firmware mods from the codeguys site. I was on regular PS0C before that. PS0B had the same problems.

I wrote an email to LiteOn customer service (real wistful euphemism there!) asking for updated firmware or an unscrambled one that I could try to modify. I received the following inane answer:

"Thank you for contacting Liteon IT Support.

In order to ensure you get legal firmware please download it from our official
website:
http://www.liteonit.com/global/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=154
Then please try to update it under Safe Mode or on another PC to check whether
the problems remains the same.
If possible, please try attach the drive on another PC/OS for further diagnose.
In case the problem remains the same, that seems drive fault, please send it
back to the retailer for services.

If you have additional questions, please let us know!
When responding, DO please include all regarding details and previous emails.
We know your time is valuable and hope for a prompt resolution to your inquiry.
Further information, please visit LiteON IT Corp official web site -

Your sincerely,"

This steaming turd of an email is the standard response I get from them. :a They simply refuse to acknowledge technical issues or that a user may perhaps know what they are talking about.

I found out that OmniPatcher 2.6.2 does not support the 5S/6S drives, and so am wondering if anyone has a patcher that works with this firmware or if anyone can patch the PS0C firmware or at least look at it to see if the Ritek S04 is not in there or if they just didn’t put any burn speeds in the table.

At this point, I’m tempted just to go out and buy another drive, but it’s a matter of principle and I paid for the drive and discs and expect them to work! Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!
