These IDE cards support the 48bit LBA (officially introduced with ATA133, but can be used on patched ATA100 controllers as well).
By adding such a controller you put your new drive on it and it'll work like a charm. That's because the controller has a BIOS of its own...
Your mainboard's chipset (440BX/ZX) can't outdo 137Gb, that's right. With software tools it should be possible though. I recently installed a 160Gb drive in a P1-233Mhz system and got it to work without too much of a hassle
