1100a won't burn DVDs

A short while ago my burner quit working. Cds burn, but not dvds. Movies or ISO or anything. I have all the updates for windows and nero, have tried several programs, DMA is all good, even tried reinstalling the program files on different drives, and I’m not quite comfortable with doing a flash. If anyone can tell whats wrong by my log, here ya go:

Hi & welcome  !

You’re probably trying to burn hi-speed 16X discs on this old burner. This won’t work… You can try a firmware update but the latest release for this unit is likely to be a couple years old as well, so you may be out of luck. If you can find some good 4X DVD+R’s (Verbatim, TDK,…) somewhere, they’ll probably work fine.

I’m actually using verbatim that only supports 4X or 2.4x.

these have always worked great. I was halfway through a stack of a hundred when it went cooky.

OK, if you haven’t changed anything else then the dvd-laser is probably getting weak. You can try cleaning the lens and do the firmware update anyway (there’s full instructions on the NEC download site), before replacing the drive.

First, have you tried more than one disc - one selected from much farther down in the stack?

To be conservative about cleaning you could first try just blowing compressed air inside the drive without taking it apart in the hope of dislodging any dust or lint lying on the lens. If that doesn’t work take the drive apart and use the compressed air again, but be careful to be gentle and not knock anything out of alignment. If compressed air doesn’t do the job what I’ve seen suggested is to try cleaning the lens with de-ionized water and a soft natural hair brush or lint free tissue. I believe de-ionized water can be purchased at the drugstore.

You won’t be able to upgrade the firmware on a Dell 1100A with one from the NEC site. Maybe you could reflash it with the 10GE from Dell. If you decide to try a hacked firmware, find out first whether you have a servo 5 or servo 7 version of the drive. I could only find two follow up reports from people who’ve flashed a servo 5 drives with a servo 7 firmware - both worked well initially but stopped working shortly after. You can find out whether you have a servo 5 or 7 drive by following the instruction for backing up your current firmware in the “Flashing Your Drive!” section at the bottom of etna’s NEC ND1x00A DVD RW Firmware page.
