109 and burning cdr's

Ive noticed that with my 109 that i can only burn cdr’s at 24x, i can select upto 40x but they fail, every single time after about 40 - 70%

to get a succesfull burn i have to use 24x, my cdr’s are rated at 52x, im using the 1.50 firmware, but also noticed this was the same with the 1.40 firmware.

any ideas or is this drive just a POS?

Doesn’t mean they are actually ABLE to reach 52x. Lots of false claims from manufacturers on the boxes.
Most of those cheap noname “52x” CDs you’ll find in hypermarkets won’t even burn above 12x.

This is probably a media issue, as I can burn quality CD-Rs (Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, TDK, FUJI) up to 32x on my Pioneer 109. I don’t use higher speeds because I like my burns to be perfect :wink: - I even never burn at more than 12x for audio CDs. Too many bad surprises in the past.

Anyway, my point is: try using reliable medias (from the brands I mention above) before accusing the 109…

What are your “52x rated” CDs?

If it came new 1.17 FW it could be one the bad fookers like mine and nothing you can do will fix it not any FW, pioneer told me to return mines, i was given a A-09 in return by shop and it was 1.40FW out box i flashed to 1.50 and burnt my 52x cdr media at 40x although playback in other roms aint so good but pioneer reads it.

I had same probs as you although i didnt test at slower speeds but i did fail sometimes on cdrw and there only 24x on this drive so similar speed, anyhow i rather burn my cdrw at 32x on my teac.

Make sure you have DMA enabled as well.

109 has issues with some media, (good media and bad media), some makes burn ok and others makes fail on audio cdrs only???

I find the 109 a good dvd burning/reading drive, better than the normal ones I buy Nec 3520, but 109 has issues when burning audio cdrs on some makes of media.

RMA your drive or find a make of cdr that works and stick to it!!

They al lwork, even some silver top ones, but only at 24x, its a awesom dvd burning drive tho and as i dont burn that many audio cds its not such a issue as for some, i mean 24x aint that slow really is it lol.

Have you identified the media code of the discs? Use something like Liteon’s smartburn utility or Plextor’s cdvdinfo. I find the CD burning on the Pioneer DVR-109 with firmware 1.50 to be among the best I’ve seen quality-wise for current generation DVD burners. Jitter levels are nice and low too. The media I use for testing are Sony 48x, Fuji 48x (Prodisc), Verbatim 4x/12x/32x CD-RW’s, CMC 4x/12x CD-RW’s, and Kodak 48x (Gigastorage).

The only discs I’ve found that the DVR-109 sucks on are Verbatim 32x CD-RW discs. Those discs are of course beyond the spec of the drive, but they burn much better on the 4163B A104 and the Samsung TSH-552U US06. The resulting disc doesn’t have any C2 errors but the C1 and jitter levels are ugly, though still better than the DW1620 and PX-716A who have C1 indexes > 250 and jitter levels close to 20%.

And then there’s the possibility that theninjagecko (who started this thread) is using iTunes to burn his CD-R with. iTunes maxes out at 24X, purportidly for quality reasons.

Hi folks,

I bought an Asus DRW-1608P (Pioneer DVR-109 rebadged) a week ago. It came with Fw 1.17. I’ ve exactly the same problem.

What is the problem: Burning audio CD-Rs at speeds higher than 16X.

Till now I achived 100% sucess while burning audio CD-Rs at 16X . I trashed a few at 24X and a lot of them at 32X. The problem gets worse with speed increase.

Nero reports:
Write error.
Illegal media.

Tests I made:

Flashed Fw: 1.40
Installed Nero V6.3.1.18F bundled
Installed Nero V6.6.0.13
Installed the drive on a machine with no previous burn problems
Changed media brands: TDK, Sony, Ritek, …

Nothing helped.

I have no problems recording DVDs or Data CD-Rs at 40X in the same media.

Should I RMA the drive?

The computer has an Intel Pentium 4 CPU @ 1.7Ghz and 256Mb of RAM, 16Mb are used by the onboard VGA. The system is rock solid stable in every situation. It is used solely for business purposes. No games or crapware testing.

I manually configured a 60Mb Nero Ultrabuffer for the previous test burn. It didn´t change a thing. I always burn from HDD (80Gb, 7200rpm, 2Mb cache). Burn image or on-the-fly doesn´t matter.

The other system were I tested the drive had a separate 64Mb NVidia graphics board and the result was the same.

I tested Sonic RecordNow Delux V7.3. When effective audio CD-R recording speed exceeded 24x the burn failled… the target was 40X.

This is not an Nero issue…

The PSU is a 180W Power Man.

Specifications:
Max OutPut Power: 180W
+3.3V & +5V = 125W (Max)
+3.3V & +5V & 12V = 169W (Max)

Actual values on startup:
VCore 1.71V
+3.3V > 3.31V
+5V > 5.05V
+12V > 11.97V

I only use a PCI slot for a D-Link DWL-G520+ Wireless card. No USB devices.

I also tested the drive on another PC (another PSU) as I stated above…

I think we can rule out the PSU… agree?

with FW 1.40, i can only do 24x with a fail error once in a long while.

i had error with 32x a few time.

now with FW 1.50, i can do 32x with no error so far.

FW 1.50 seems to be more stable than 1.40 for me.

I’m already using FW 1.50. Continues trashing CD-Rs when recording audio at more than 16X…

If firmware 1.50 does produce bad CDs, why not stick to 12x burning or slower, does it matter that you cant burn super fast, it’s fast enought anyway.

It’s like the 52x cd burners, yeah its fast but I never burned that fast, I never burned faster than 8x and that was fast enought for me.

The importent thing is, if you burn slower are the errors still there, and dont forgett media issues, try a high quality brand and try to see if that fixes it.

Most low quality brands can’t do verry high speeds.
