if i remember well it is capable for DVD+R DL but I haven't flashed the driver since I bought it, and worked wonders with SL dvds.

Now I need to burn DL dvds, is the 1640 reliable and is there limits or a list of capable dvds that can be burnt with this burner ?

thank you for your help and any advice for the media to purchase.

I found these, but I don't know if my 1640 will be able to handle them :

    Mediarange 8x DVD+R DL :

    Intenso 8x DVD+R DL :

thank for any advice / comments.

Yep, the drive [not to be confused with driver ] can burn DVD+R DL as well as DVD-R DL.

There is a limitation on what the drive can burn. It only has a few strategies for DL media in its firmware. And out of that list, MKM 001 and MKM 003 [DVD+R DL] are the most recommended. These media are found under the Verbatim or Mitsubishi brand [as they are made by/for Mitsubishi/Verbatim, and occasionally other brands]. MKM 001 is the 2.4x DVD+R DL, and MKM 003 is the 8x DVD+R DL.

Those discs will give you the best overall performance. Anything else, and you have a 50/50 chance of getting a working disc. Verbatim costs more initially, but considering their failure rate versus cheap media, they are cheaper in the long run.

MediaRange is RICOHJPN-D01 and 100% crap.

Forget about burning this media at its rated speed (8x). I've burned quite a few of this crap and BenQ's (Nexperia) are the only burners able to handle it acceptable (PIF 50k+) at 4x.
My Sammys S203* SATA burner and Litey LH-20A1* can't burn them at all, errors out at second layer.

Dont do a Star Trek and boldly go where no man has gone before...

I have on my 1640 with BSLB firmware NEVER got anything but Verbatim to be good 90+ in quality. I only use MKM 001 (MIS). I more or less always get a good burn some extremly good.

If I have some MKM003 I use my 1655 for them instead. With excellent results.

Well I have tried 20 ricoh(dont remember the media code, nor do I want to remember it) and got 20 coasters on my 1640. Some didnt even burn all the way and got an error halfway or error somewhere else. Lesson learned the expensive way

I also had some bad MKM001 but it must have been either not MIS or a bad batch but that was some time ago.

I know that I dont venture out of my comfort zone but If the burns are good. I'm a happy camper. If it works I dont change anything unless I have to.

Intenso still does what they have done always...they buy discs from several manufacturers and offer them under their own label.
You really never know what you really get with Intenso media.

Verbatim DVD+R DL (MKM 001) burned on BenQ 1640 FW BSPB using Nero v7.5.7.0 set at 8X burning speed.

All controls set at stock default without modification.
