I have an NEC ND3550 that has been flashed w/Liggy's V1.07 firmware. My original problem was poor burns or complete burn failures. From this forum I was told the media I was using, Ritek D01 was crap and I should buy some Verbatim disks (DVD+R DL). I did. Now the NEC doesn't even see the Verbatim's. DVD Identifier says Initialization failed. All twenty disks. I took a disk to work, installed DVD Identifier, and it saw the verbatim. The results of DVD ID are posted below.
Does anyone see anything in these results that may cause my NEC not to be able to read these?

Thanks for any help.

There are several problems involved. First: Ritek D01 are not "crap." They are good DL discs if one's drive is properly aligned to support them. Verbatim media have an advantage in having wider firmware support--after all, Verbatim invented DL recording--but having a drive that does not work with Ritek discs does not have any influence on the quality of the discs.

Second: firmware updates should always be from the drives' firmware engineers who have access to sophisticated equipment and knowledge about the parts. Many people foolishly tried to convert their NEC ND-2500s to ND-2510s for DL recording by using a firmware hack. In half the cases it worked. In the other half of the cases, the ND-2500 had a different optical pick-up; and the extra power destroyed the drives. It sounds as though your problems started with the firmware hack.

liggy's firmware hacks are considered safe, and improve upon nec's
negligence in not supporting bitsetting of dvd+r

don't confuse crossflashing with using modified firmware

Reflashed with NEC's v1.07. I'll worry about bitsetting when I learn what it is. I did disconnect the other drive even though it is a SATA drive. It didn't help. Imgburn still says no medium present.

The following log was in my original post and it still concerns me. Talks about method one error, illegal request, invalid field. etc.

This log is from DVD Identifier of the verbatim disk and was read on a different machine. Is it possible this nec just can't deal with whatever this error is? Is it possibly a fake? I'd hate to think so. I got them from the Egg.
Please keep in mind this drive still sees the Ritek disks

As for the Ritek D01. I can only go by what I read. Most articles and posts call them poor quality. One lists them as class three media with a 80 -50% success rate. The MKM001 is listed as class one.

Anyway thanks for the suggestions and any more on the way.

NEC does not consider any hacks to be safe, and changing settings invalidates the warranty. They became especially tough when thousands of hacked and useless ND-2500 drives were being returned under an invalidated warranty. I was only going by CurleyG's claim that he had changed his firmware to 1.07, and I was not aware that that hack was simply a change to add bit setting to the drive. NEC once did offer a bit-setting utility for their drives that did not invalidate the warranties.

Partly agreed, but sometimes the manufacturer's firmwares lack features (like bitsetting) and if they are not willing to add them to their firmwares, that's where patchers start.

I have not heard of a single ND-2500A drive that broke from being crossflashed to ND-2510A. Not even someone mentioning that DL burns on his drive didn't work.

NEC considers any change to their drives as an invalidation of the warranty. Scores of ND-2500s were returned "under warranty" because of the attempts to turn them into DL recorders.

NEC once offered a bit-setting utility that did not invalidate their warranty, but I'm not sure if it was for public release.

What happened to the first post on this thread?

OT: I never did say thanks for the ND-2500 --> 2510 crossflash. It was my first experience with DL burning, and it was an enjoyable one. The drive is still kicking around here somewhere.

So, thanks!

Looks like something is wrong on the database. I think we need to issue a "repair table" command, however this will lock the post table and needs to be done when there's not much traffic on the forum. I hope the first post is not completely lost and will come back after the db repair.

Sorry for any inconvenience.
[EDIT]Repaired table. Some duplicate posts may appear now[/EDIT]

Unfortunately NEC only support bitsetting DVD+R-DL media in their own (non-OEM) firmwares. But many people (like me) also want to have it for DVD+R and maybe even DVD+RW. I have never seen a tool from NEC, but MadDog (a NEC OEM) had a nice utility for bitsetting - plus their firmwares support it on all kind of + media

Curleyg,

there's another possibility besides a corrupted flash/firmware, my nec 3550 went totally bonkers for a while, it was still burning OK but disks would read as dvd+rw
when I went to scan them(dvd+r mcc004 bitset to dvd-rom) AND rather than blame this on Liggy or Dee I tried to clean the drive. It worked for a while, using compressed air, finally I had to disassemble the drive. It had seen lots of use/abuse burning multiple disks back to back at 8x, after disassembly I found
the problem, sloppy manufacturing, a dab of white silicone? had been left on one of the main chipsets, you could see where it had outgassed, I cleaned the laser lens, it then burned a mcc004 with a pif total of <100 as confirmed with my beng1650.

Craziest thing I ever saw and I still have a hard time believing it.

Ok Guys and Girls,

Can we get away from cross flashing which I have not done. Second the drive has been flashed with "NEC original v1.07" it's just an upgrade. I was advised to do that since I was receiving errors. The advise was to buy Verbatim disks and update my firmware. Now I don't know if the drive would have read the MKM001's prior to the flash since they were on their way when I flashed it.The drive works fine. I can play a movie, burn to riteks (although with errors), but it just won't see the MKM001 disks.

Someone please comment on these errors seen on the blank Verbatim as read with DVD Identifier on a different machine.

11:21:04] DVD+R/+RW Medium Detected. Starting Identification...
[11:21:04] ** Initiating ADIP Retrieval Method 1 (Original ADIP)
[11:21:04] ERROR : ADIP Read M1 Failed : Illegal request - Invalid field in CDB [05/24/00]
[11:21:04] INFO : ADIP Read Method 1 Not Supported ; Method 2 Will Be Attempted
[11:21:04] ** Initiating ADIP Retrieval Method 2 (Copy Of ADIP)
[11:21:04] ADIP Read Method 2 Completed Without Errors
[11:21:04] Disc Identification Completed Successfully

But the way, last drive I tried to disassemble for cleaning went to the trash in ten pieces. Thus the relatively new NEC.

Didn't mean to start a battle over cross flashing, which we don't do anyway. Or a battle about media quality, just going by advice from this forum.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. A new drive is looking better and better.
I will try the compressed air thing. I have run a couple of drive cleaning disks through the drive.

I don't see a way to close this link, or edit the title, so I'll just do this.
[B]Problem Solved !![B] I replaced the nec with a Lite-On DVDRW LH-20A1P. Reads the MKM's just fine.

Thanks to all who participated.
