Intermittent combo DVD/CD-RW HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4241N
| General Hardware Forum Discuss, Intermittent combo DVD/CD-RW HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4241N at Hardware forum; I am having problems with this combo DVD/RW from LG in my HP-nx9010 notebook. The combo drive is intermittent. Sometimes it reads the CD's or DVD's I put on it, but most of the time it won't read anything (it will say "Insert CD" after trying to read the media). |

I am having problems with this combo DVD/RW from LG in my HP-nx9010 notebook. The combo drive is intermittent. Sometimes it reads the CD's or DVD's I put on it, but most of the time it won't read anything (it will say "Insert CD" after trying to read the media). I have already updated the firmware, the BIOS from the Notebook but nothing happened. I think it is some kinf of adjustment in the drive. In Brazil we call it "Drive alignment". I have searched the web for instructions on how to do it but I found no documents teaching how to align a drive. Does anyone have a tip ?
Thanks in advance for all those mercyfull souls who help me in this issue!

Could be that some software is interfering and preventing other software/driver from running corectly.
What burning apps are installed?
Is the IMAPI burn engine service disabled?
Is Packet-Writing software installed?
Have you tried to clean the lens of the drive?
What type of media/content have you tried with your drive? -

I thought about it. I am even thinking about reinstalling windows. But my instalation is working so nice... Besides, I have made a simple test to see if some software was interfering with the drive. I have booted the computer with some CD's. If the problem was really with windows, it should boot OK with any CD. The problem is that sometimes it won't boot with those CD's as well.Quote:Originally Posted by _chef_Could be that some software is interfering and preventing other software/driver from running corectly.
Nero 6 Ultra edition version 6.6.0.16Quote:Originally Posted by _chef_What burning apps are installed?
I beg your pardon... But do you mean the built-in Windows recording software ? If this is what you are talking about I have disabled it.Quote:Originally Posted by _chef_Is the IMAPI burn engine service disabled?
Well... I don't think so. I had clone CD installed in my notebook, but I uninstalled it. But the software you are relating here is direct-cd or in-cd, right ? If this is the case, no.Quote:Originally Posted by _chef_Is Packet-Writing software installed?
Yes. Cleaning notebook drive lens is quite easy.Quote:Originally Posted by _chef_Have you tried to clean the lens of the drive?
Right now, while I am writing this message, if I put any "original" cd (cd from Microsoft, Norton, original Audio CD's, etc) it will read well. If I put ANY recorded CD (can be a simple 700MB CD-R/CD-RW or a DVD-R/DVD-RW) it simply won't read. Looks like my combo drive is against piracy (just kidding). The problem is that I can't read my CD's with files I need to work on (it will say: "Please insert a disk into drive E", although the CD IS inserted). There are times, however, that it will read these kinds of media. Looks like it has self will.Quote:Originally Posted by _chef_What type of media/content have you tried with your drive?
For all these reasons I think this might be a problem with hardware regulation. I know that some people regulate a screw to adjust the laser ray on the drive, so it's "sensibility" is adjusted. We call it here in Brazil "drive alignment". I would really apreciate a link or tips on how to do it. -

I have this same drive in my comcrap laptop (of course, made by HP).
I have the same fucking problem.
I have tried everything listed above for a couple months... Tonight, however, I needed the drive to function for something important. It, of course, decided to not work at all.
I believe it is in the failure stage. *laugh*
Anyhow, it tries to read, gurgles a little, sputters and then wheezes.
I'm going to consider it dead and replace it with something better, newer and with more surgical enhancements. -

This is not your drive, it's the laptop (I think). I am having the same problem. dell Lat D600. Drive WILL WORK in my IDENTICAL other laptop, and that laptop's drive WILL NOT work in this laptop. Extensive TS'g with Dell determined that I will have to reinstall OS. Trust me, I have tried EVERYTHING else. I feel your pain. Also, I no longer see the drive letter in my explorer, although the player will play an audio CD (just can't see it in explorer). -

See if you can get this driver, might work for you. Doesn't work for me. I run the app and it says can't recognize the drive. http://ftp.us.dell.com/rmsd/R71235.EXE
