DVD won't read any cd's but it plays dvd's

Hello,

I am new to your group I found it trying to figure out what is wrong with my dvdrw 1008.

It will play dvd's great however it will not read a cd at all for any reason and I have updated the firmware to the latest 50 and it gave no change.

I also have an hp dvr840X and it also does the same thing, however if I leave a cd in it say for 3-5 min. it will read a cd after I had unistalled and reinstalled nero 6, it seems there is a software conflict of some such.

I would like to ask if anyone has ever had this problem and if so what did you find to repair it?

My Machine is:

AMD Athlon XP 64 3200+
EPOX 9NDA3
2gb ram
160gb drive
btc dvdrw 1008
hp dvr840X
Abit Siluro GF4 TI4400
nvidia nforce networking controller

Try to boot Windows installation CD from that drive.
If this doesn't work, it could be that the CD laser has died. Then you need a new drive

You say it works after you have reinstalled Nero, are you using InCD too? If yes then try it without it. Another thing which could help is to uninstall the nvidia chipset drivers if you have them installed. These often cause problems.
