"Best" external hard drive for storing WAV files?

Any particular brands of external hard drives that others recommend for storing WAV files?

Does overall capacity or speed make any difference?

400gb & 500gb firewire 800 & USB 2. If there too expensive you could get a internal ide hard drive and stick it in one of them external cases.

i'd recommend a lossless compression format, rather than raw wav

. but otherwise, capacity will probably matter more than speed, judging by what you are using it for.

Seems to me...since cdr's lose their data in a few years, and harddrives can die in a few years...

We need to take our cd's (especially ROIO sources) and make good old fashioned vinyl albums out of them...

Those last forever...if you take care of 'em....

Anyone got a vinyl press?

Erm, what is your experience of this? We may not have had a decade of CDRs in our lives, but surely they are not as volatile as you suggest...?

Personally the only bad experience I've had with losing data has been some no-name brand I borrowed off a friend...

All the cd's I've burnt with TDK, Fuji, Memorex etc. are all still working...I mentioned the data loss thing cause of other postings about it...I'm only experienced in 3 years of burning...

I use Mitsui...that are supposed to last 100 years!...I hope they last at least 10....

I was really jesting about the vinyl storage...but then again....

I agree with CKIN2001,there is about a ten to one ratio,when comparing wav files
to MP3,so why not get an MP3 converter,
convert ALL your bulky .wav files to MP3,at around 256-320kbps,and see 1) how much hard drive space you save,and
2)how many MP3's you can get on that hard drive......Good Luck

actually, mp3 is a lossy format (and not one of the best either), not a lossless format. lossless formats include FLAC, Monkey's Audio, Shorten, etc.

AZ,you're 100% right,but those formats don't have the ubiquitous acceptance in burning programs,or portable memory players,which is why I suggested that one.....
