    CD-R and CDR-RW identification

As some of you may already know there are some CD programs that can tell you the name of the brand/manufacturer name of an inserted CD-R or CD-RW disc. Well, the name isn't actually recorded on the disc instead the ATIP start of lead-in time is used for that.

ATIP is recorded in the entire spiral of the disc. During the manufacturing of the CD-R disc a pair of physical grooves are created on the side of the recording path and this groove normally encodes a running MSF time, but in the lead-in area it encodes extra info. The software on our computers read out only this extra info.

    How the disc identification works

The ATIP info in the lead-in area gives the "start of lead-in time in MSF" and it is said to be unique for each brand/manufacturer and also includes the dye type code.

    Brand/manufacturer code:
This is the digits of the minutes, seconds and the first digit of the frame.
    Dye type code:
This is the remaining second digit of the frame.

For values 0 to 4 this indicates a long strategy recording type and an example of such dye type is Cyanine type media.

For values 5 to 9 this indicates a short strategy recording type and an example of such dye type is Phthalocyanine type media.
    Examples:

    Ex 1.
    MSF: 97:17.06
    Manufacturer: TDK

    Manufacturer code: 97:17.0
    Dye type code: 6
    Ex 2.
    MSF: 97:31.01
    Manufacturer: Samsung

    Manufacturer code: 97:31.0
    Dye type code: 1
    Building a public list

Perhaps it is a bit late, but I was thinking of building a "public" list to identify manufacturer names.

If you are bored like me and wish to join in please post your CD-R or CD-RW info as follows:

    Disc type: x
ATIP start of lead-in MSF: y
    Brand/Manufacturer: z

You can you any tool that reports the ATIP start of lead-in MSF, e.g. Nero Info Tool, DVD info pro, etc.

Or, if you prefer to use my public domain command line program :

    Windows binary:
    http://www.cdtool.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/read_atip.zip

    Hi,

just to clarify: with "manufacturer" you mean the brand these discs are sold under?

Great idea. I had always wondered why someone had not started something like this back when i first joined CDF's

My CD-R(W) blank collection only consists of a few brands/mgr's so i don't have many to offer. I'll have to see if you have all of mine posted already.

Ops, yup. I'll amend, and also move this thread to the more appropriate Blank media forum.

    @Bob, cool.

I'll join in, although like Bob I don't have a variety of ATIPs to contribute.

OT: Is such a list available for DVDs? Aside from Videohelp's DVD/BD Media database?

EDIT: By the way Truman, I'll be compiling under Mac OS X 10.5.6, are there any caveats on the ATIP "reader" that you posted? I'm gonna try using the Linux source, not the Ubuntu package.

Ok, I guess I'll be using my Windows virtual machine to do the ATIP reading since I can't compile the read_atip app that was posted.

Ops, I don't have a Mac else I would try to make source for it also. Yep caveat is that linux one uses sg driver which is normally built in 2.4 and higher kernels.

Hmm, good question, perhaps we can do also a DVD one later. Most dvd recordable media have the full name recorded into the lead-in, but I have seen some using abbreviations or short code.

    Also, about virtual machines:

Sun's VirtualBox and MS VirtualPC do not allow scsi pass through (raw commands) to be sent. They emulate a few commands like read12 2048 only I think.

VMWare workstation does work - all commands work on it.

I forgot to mention that ATIP command normally only work for burners.

I use VMWare Fusion which has great compatibility with every optical drive application I throw at it, and my scanning platform for CDs/DVDs and occasional ImgBurn-ing.

I'm compiling a short list of what I have now, which may be appended to further when I see some weird ATIPs

    Thanks.

I've been thinking and I know there are already programs that can do this, but I havn't seen a public domain tool yet.

I am thinking to make a GUI or perhaps keep the program as console based but add in the ability to read from a .ini file of atip list. it is just to make things a little more interesting.

I'm not sure if these results are written in the right way, but these are results I got from some CDs I bought today for some testings.

To retrieve data I used a Liteon LH-20A1P
