I just recently bought the LG GGC-H20L Blu-Ray / HDDVD combo dirve and im runing with sme problems. I connected it using the SATA cable, and it seems that BOIS does detected as it was listed as the SATA slave. In Windows Vista Ultimate x64, drive (C:) was listed....However, wen i put in Trasformers on HDDVD, the cd didnt even rev up, I could not hear it..just the blue light would flash a few times, and nothihng. First I thought it was just the cd problem, because WMP would freeze upon load, and Media Player Classic would freeze.

Then I tried to put in any regular CD-ROM, and still nothing, just the light would flash. When I try to double click drive (C:) in My Computer, it would Freeze. Computer detects its there, windows installed the drivers itself, but for some reason it cannot read any media i put in..just crashes my pc.

Any Solutions??? I think it may be SATA problem. I have Asus A8VE-SE, with VIA K8T890. AMD X2 4400+.

Did you check your autoplay options, defaults?

My GGC-H20L just arrived and I will be installing it this evening and will check back to see how you are coming along on this.

I have a very similar thread here already. You're probably going to need a SATA PCI card for optical drives. But be sure the VIA is in IDE mode. Mine wouldn't even boot with the drive hooked up.

Wow that sucks! It works great on my Gigabyte board. I guess I was very lucky. Sorry to hear you're having such problems. This is an absolutely AMAZING drive. Yesterday I ripped my Italian Job Blu-ray to my hard drive to see how fast it was and it ripped in about 35 minutes. WOO HOO!

Good luck to you both. Assuming all goes well, you won't be disappointed with this drive. The only thing I'd caution you about is relying on the gimped version of PowerDVD Ultra that ships with the drive. It'll work ok, I suppose, but, it limits the audio decoding options. The full version doesn't have these problems.

ok well on Vista, its a no-show..i have no idea what to do..my pc detects that the drive is present, and i can even eject the drive by rightclicking the icon and selecting 'eject'. But uppon loading vista, even wen a regular cd or dvd is insterted, windows wont even boot..it would just give be blank scrn. Basically in Visa Ultimate x64 - the drive is completely dead - even though it detected it and istalled the drivers istelf

On Xp - 64bit edition however, i had better luck. the drive was fully working. I was able to load any kind of media, and it would play it great..even the software it came with i installed it - PowerDVD..but different problems. On xp, PowerDVD would freeze, and would compatibility checker, it would tell me that I needed Xp - sp2, HDCP card, and updated GPU drivers - well i have the Ati HD2900XT, soo it is HDCP compliant and i do have updated drivers

this is driving me nuts...anyone please help..howcan i get it working on Vista?? do i rely need another PCI-SATA card?? or any other way possible?

I've got mine working on Vista Ultimate x86, but, I do not have x64 running on that machine. I'm guessing your issues are related to 64 bit OS'. As for a solution, I have no idea.

Definitely incompatibility problem with your onboard VIA chipset. This drive (as any other SATA drives) love to run on Intel, *some* JMicron or Silicon Image chipsets.

As others mentioned, you will be better off getting a PCI Sata controller. Try Syba SD-SATA-4P with SiL 3114. (if you're in Canada maybe try other online/local stores). This card comes with RAID bios from the manufacturer so you'll need to flash it with IDE/Base bios before using it with your LG drive. Link to SiI3114 BIOS is here: http://www.siliconimage.com/support/...&ctid=2&osid=0&

Alright, I got the drive to work and mce 2005 sees it fine and powerdvd ultra plays both BR and HDdvd just fine too. I installed it on the intel ICH sata port as CDan suggested, but I'm pretty sure it will work on the syba Sil 3114 pci sata card as I have HD's installed on there individually and not in raid configuration. I have HD's on 3 IDE and 5 sata ports on my mobo and now including this drive in the 6th sata port. Also have 8 HD's tied into the syba Sil 3114 pci sata cards.

But, I am having issues with this drive playing normal DVD disc's. Is this player not compatible with regular DVD disc's? cause power dvd 7 ultra and media center 2005 dvd player both gives me an error that says to lower my resolution on my display to play the DVD (but it's only on 1280x720). Funny thing is my ripped dvd's play just fine. Does anyone know what could be the issue with this?

Also, I been trying to get my graphics's card to display on two separate displays but I'm having trouble getting it display 720 on one and 1080i on the other. Well its actually 1 display but two separate inputs.

Ok guys...I'm following up after much investigation...and good news!!!
Ok as I thought, the SATA connection was not THE INITIAL problem.
I guess with me, the problem was the 64-bit version of windows Vista and XP that I had...I reinstalled windows xp 32bit, and the drive works perfect...it updated the firmware itself, and it plays all media types, Including BD and HD movies in PowerDVD Ultra that it came with.

BUT...IM running into another problem now. 300 on Bluray and Trasformers In HDDVD lagg like crazzy. It is just unwatchable.
I think Now the problem may be the SATA port on my Motherboard. My motherboard has 2 SATA connections, but I suspect that the GGC-H20L is a SATA II interface (3.0gb/s) whilst mine is just max transfer rate of 1.5gb/s
Anyone think that the lag may be caused because of that or could it be something else???
    anyone elses movies lagg???

Do you own AnyDVD HD? If so, I recommend making an ISO image of 300 on your hard drive, mount it with Daemon Tools, and try watching it from that. That'll give you a good idea if it's the drive or something else on your system.

SATA speed is not the problem, there isn't single drive out there, that can max out SATA right now.

but since it is SATA, the problem might be very simple, its an old SATA controller, old SATA controllers are not very good with optical drives.

Just for fuel - I have the LG GGW-H20L on Vista 64 Ultimate and it works great. I even burned a 50gb dual-layer data disk the other day and it worked great as well. Took the 50gb data disk to a friend with a Sony drive/burner and it read it no problem.

I've watched blu-ray (casino royal, eyes wide shut) and HD (blade-runner final cut) movies without issue. I rented Sunshine last night, but it dies on ch16 - but can play ch17. Not sure if it's the disc or the drive (likely the disc)

    I have a Core2D 6850 + Intel P35 mb board running 3 drive raid.

True, the compatibility between SATA controller and SATA drives/burners is a well known issue. I believe it was first introduced with the release of Plextor PX-712SA a couple years ago. Even Plextor, at that time, released motherboard compatibility chart, which most of them are Intel base SATA controller.

I still think that the problem here is the Sata controller since the OP is using VIA chipset.

gokhor101, maybe you can run CDSpeed Burst rate test and see how much mb/s you get. You should get more than 30 mb/s if the controller is not an issue.

Ditto, I'm surprised it works at all. Since it works in one OS and not the other, then it's the 64b driver that's at fault. Of course, the fact that it "works" doesn't mean it works right. The SIL card will be the shortest route to a trouble-free life.

well I took some of Cdan's advice, and some of the investigation of my own..and as it turns out, that my SATA controller was the problem. my mobo is almost 3 years old, and back then SATA at speed of 3.0Gbps was not released. I went to CanadaComputers, and I bout a PCI-Express 1x expansion slot of a SATAII controller...
AND it works perfect...both Transoformers in HDDVD, and 300 on Blu-ray works flawlessly...
thanks for all the helps guys....and what is ANYDVD HD..is a program that i can rip my HD movies onto my HDD???

Yes, AnyDVD HD will remove the protection from you HD DVD's and Blu-ray discs allowing you to rip them to your hard drive. I typically make ISO images of my movies on my hard drive so I can easily point and click mount them at will. Check out Slysoft's website if you want more information. Also there's an AnyDVD forum here on CDF that you can visit.

It might be helpful to others of you post the brand of the card, and the maker/model of the SATA chipset.

    Hello everyone,

I'm looking at buying this drive. Does anyone know if the drive will work on an Asus P5W-DH Deluxe motherboard?

It has these onboard SATA chipsets
    -Intel ICH7R South Bridge (3xSata 3.0Gb/s)
    -Jmicron JMB363 controller (1xSata 3.0Gb/s)

I'm guess that it will work, since most people seem to report it working on intel chipsets.

BTW, my graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 320mb and my monitor a Samsung 275T, both of which are HDCP enabled (as far as I'm aware). I'm running XP professional SP2 32-bit.

    Welcome to cdfreaks, djdowlz.

I have the P5W DH Dlx motherboard and I can confirm that SATA ODD (such as GGC-H20L) will work on its Intel and JMicron SATA controllers.

    Hi,
I'm having a stuttering problem with BD disks that use the newer compression algorithms (posted this elsewhere).
I did your suggestion with NERO and I'm getting 7 mb/s burst rate!!!!!

What I'm unsure about is why my CPU goes to 100%....

I have an nforce4 sata chipset. If I get a different sata pci card (any suggestions?), even if this corrects the burst rate problem, will my cpu go down from 100%?

What doesn't make sense to me is other BD or HD-DVD disks run at a much lower CPU level.

I'm just curious if my problem lies elsewhere...

I have an 8800GTS card, 3800+ processor, 2GB ram and the LG drive

    Thanks.
