I would like to be able to rip my dvd's and encode to full resolution (720x480 for standard DVD). My options though depend on which preset I choose and I can't find the standard DVD resolution among the presets. For instance if I select ipod.mpeg4, I can choose (among many) 720x320 (2.25:1) or 480x480 (1.00:1), but no 720x480 (1.50:1). I will try the different ratios and see what the result is. Am I right to assume it will have no "stretching" effect on the actual movie, and that the size of the black bars changes instead?
I thought it would be ideal to choose a resolution and aspect ratio appropriate for the movie since different movies have different aspect ratios. But maybe all DVD players send the same resolution signal (720x480) to televisions regardless of the aspect ratio. Can anyone comment on this?
Also, can I somehow choose the video and audio encoders seperately rather than what is already in the presets? I would like to use mpeg4 for video and mp3 for audio because (and correct me if I'm wrong) I think that would make for the highest compatibility. I don't think h.264/AAC are very universal ... are they?
By the way, I do not want more universally compatible files for sharing sake. This is for me and my own DVD's, but I want them to be able to play on my iPod, PocketPC, etc... I want to reduce the chance that any given player will not be able to decode the file.
Oh... and will an iPod even play an mpeg4 video that is full DVD resolution? I think their site says 640x480.

USE vob passthorugh, which is a drop down choice after you select generic. This preserves everything that you've selected for inclusion.
& note that it's also possible to rename to VOB fie output as MPEG, for wider compatibility with other players. You should only rename it if you've selected aa sinlge audio stream though, keep to .vob for fiels with multiple audio streams. -

Hi Addie....
I would like to add in my 2 shillings worth here as a well-skilled encoder/decoder of at least 5 years experience. (I actually think the first one I did was in 1992)
Let's get something straight first though. I do not and will not buy "A" sh!t but the principles apply across all devices.
1. It is useless encoding to a higher resolution than your device will support. Problems will occur with translation of non-native resolutions and will manifest themselves as blocking & jitter.
2. Find out what bitrates your device supports an ensure that this is correct.
3. Use the old tried and true method of "Trial & Error" to find a standard that gives you good results.
4. You can actually modify the profiles to suit your preferences and do this once you get stage 3 right.__________________
