Microsoft today announced that all Windows 10 versions will get the possibility to set up and sign in to the operating systems through SMS messages. This way, users don't have to create a password anymore. The company has been trying for some time to eliminate passwords in Windows 10.
When users attempt to login to Windows 10 for the first time, this can be done through a Microsoft account with a phone number entered. The user can then request an SMS code. When the user has signed in to Windows 10 with that code, it's possible to setup Windows Hello Face, Fingerprint, or a PIN to sign in to the OS from then on. During, and after, the entire process no password is needed anymore.
Initially the SMS feature would only become available in the Home version of Windows 10 Insider Preview, but Microsoft has now decided to add the feature to all Insider Previews of the operating system, such as Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise.
When the SMS feature will become part of the actual release version of Windows 10, is unknown.
Some users are skeptical of the feature and fear that it's just an attempt of Microsoft to collect phone numbers.
