Winamp 3 Beta with video support

The developers of Winamp have added support for video files in their latest beta release of the software. The new version supports playback of MPEG, AVI and also DivX movies.

While Winamp was once only used for playback of MP3 files the software has grown to be a cross media platform that supported, till now, almost everykind of music media you can imagine by using plugins.

The new option to also play video files will probably also bring more video formats with it. For those that think the developers of WinAmp should stick to audio only, you can select to not install video support.

In the custom installation is now also standard an Ogg Vorbis plugin available, probably because Nullsoft is trying to push this technology to the public. Well at least, support of WinAmp for this music format is something Ogg Vorbis will help.

Here's what you should expect when downloading this beta:

  • Winamp3 is a beta which may contain bugs, we recommend that you install Winamp3 in

it's own folder rather than overwrite the Winamp 2.x installation that you currently have. If you have

a previous version of Winamp 3 you should uninstall and do a fresh install of Beta 3
    .
  • The software has several, major known issues, which prevent certain features from

being fully accessible by users. Functionality will increase as we start moving

    towards the final product
  • Who should download this beta:
  • Skin developers
  • Plug-in developers
  • Software developers
  • We recommend you install this for evaluation purposes, in order to have an

understanding of what the future holds. This beta will not be perfect, but it will

give you an idea of where we're going with the final release.
  • While I think these are good developments, (for e.g. the download size is still < 2 MB) it seems to be NullSoft is pushed to compete with Microsoft. Because Nullsoft is owned by AOL/TimeWarner and they are known to want to compete with Microsoft, but well that isn't that bad ;)
