Toshiba announces 16TB hard disk drives

Later this month, Toshiba will start to ship samples of its 16 TB hard disk drives. The HDDs are part of the company's MG08 series. To achieve the high capacity, while still using Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR), Toshiba uses a helium filled case.

In the 3.5" case, Toshiba has fitted 9 platters and 512Mib cache. The platters spin at 7,200 rounds per minute and Toshiba specifies a Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) of 2.5 million hours. Toshiba ships both a SATA and SAS variant of the MG08 series drives.

The availability of a SAS version also reveals the drives intended use cases. Toshiba targets them especially at enterprise usage, even more specific for usage in both cloud and traditional data center environments.

The company has announced that shipments of samples of the 16 TB MG08 series drives to customers will begin sequentially in the first quarter of this year. It's unknown when the drives will become generally available and at what price.
