All,

This is my first post, so please be kind! I have been reading and reading and reading (on this site and many others) about solving my problem, but have yet to find a solution.

Here's the problem: Last week, I modded by xbox 360 by rewriting the firmware on my samsung ms25 DVD drive in my 360. I have been burning DVD DL coasters ever since! I can't get a burned DVD to work in my 360! Here's my setup:

DVD drive (PC): Liteon SHW-1635s (YSOV)
DVD burning software: CloneCD (latest version)
DVD +R DL Media: Ritek
DVD Drive (360): Samsung TS-h943 (ms25)
Xbox 360 image source: newsgroups (a fully patched, ready to burn ISO)

I have tried three different game images, and all are giving the same result. The only thing I can think of at this point is to try a different type of DVD +R DL media OR maybe the firmware flash I performed to 'mod' my xbox didn't work for whatever reason. Is there an easy way to verify whether the firmware has been 'upgraded' or not? If not an easy way, is there a hard way??? My next plan is to buy various brands of media and try them out (and perhaps make more coasters). Is there something else I can try that I might not be thinking of here?

Thanks in advance for any help!

are you selecting the right file to burn

if burning at 2.4 it should take about 45mins also the .dvd file should be between 20 to 40 bytes in size

r u booktyping the media?

are you extracting all the file from the download?

Knock_on_wood, to answer your questions:

I am burning straight ISO files that have been prepatched so I do NOT have a .dvd file to burn (I'm using clonecd). I am booktyping the media to 'DVD-ROM', and yes, I'm extracting all the files from the download. The only images I've seen so far that were available for download were prepatched .iso files. Is there a 'better' type to look for?

Thanks

Writting the ISO with CloneCD will result in coasters, as the layerbreak is not set. As Knock_on_wood said select the .dvd file, and give it a try then. Ritek media is not the best, try Verbatim. You can read the firmware then compare it to the original fw (you have it, right ?) and see whether it is different or not. If it is, then you have a hacked fw installed. (and you cannot install it incorrectly otherwise you'd get a red circle error on the xbox360 when powering on) Anyway prepatched stuff has nothing to do with .dvd files, as the .dvd file is only a descriptor about where to set the layerbreak on DL media to and what the image name is.

u_n_s97:

Woo hoo! Thanks! That must be the missing link to all of this. I can't wait to get home tonight to try it out... I guess I feel dumb.. but I could care less about that if I'm able to start burning good images!

So let me ask you this: when using cloneCD, I should select the .dvd file and that will automatically tell clonecd what the 'layerbreak' is and it will then point to the .iso file for the data (kinda like BIN/CUE files)?

Exactly.

The iSO is not enough becuase CloneCD writes the layer and change to the other layer when the 1st one is filled. But Xbox/Xbox360 games are not stored that way, there is an exact address for Xbox and one for Xbox360 games where to change layer. If the layerbreak is not set or set incorrectly, the SS, DMI, PFI and other important info will be at different address where these should be at and so the machine says that the disk is unrecognisable.

Update: I have 2 images here that I want to burn. One of them has the .dvd file, the other one has a .000 file (about 7gb) and 3 .bin files (dmi, pfi, ss). I just started burning the .dvd image, but how do I handle the other one? Thanks!

Copy the .dvd file into the directory where the .000 file is. Then edit the second line of the .dvd file, replace that line with the .000 filename.

Stephen,

So it doesn't matter if I use a .dvd file from a different release? If that's the case, then that means the layerbreak is always the same.. which I didn't know. Now I feel even more dumb because I could've just made my own! Oh well. I'll try burning it with the modified .dvd file and see what happens (the one I burned last night worked great, by the way )

Thanks

Yes, as said the layerbreak is always at the same address on Xbox360 games. Yes you could have done your own easily, but most people cannot open and edit a file so how could I suppose some is able to create a new one ? Never mind, glad to hear it was working, as far as the SS in injected correctly there you cannot go wrong.

yes as stephen mentioned in the above post ....the layer break is always set as or should be set as 1913760 using clonecd or imgburn ,, clonecd sets itself up with imgburn you manually type the seven digit code via the write options

hello and sorry for asking the same question in different threads, maybe someone noticed here.

first of all how do you booktype in clonecd? and in imgburn i select booktype, and if i close the window and go to booktype it's not selected.

and is it absolutely necessary to have a .dvd file along with the .iso? anywhere i can get such a file? i know it's two lines so someone could just paste it

a friend of mine with the pioneer dvd-r just selects the .iso and burns and has a working copy. I have tried the benq 1640 with latest firmware, imgburn and a verbatim and got unrecongised by the xbox disc. I read that you have to manually type the 7 digit number in imgburn. (always the same for all isos?) and how did this copy come working from pioneer? maybe just pioneer doesn't need it? :/ i read several threads before posting but couldnt get the info i wanted

so are all dvd-rs capable of making working xbox360 copies or just a few? thanks in advance

you cannot use -r media it has got to + r dl for the 360 .... the pioneer 111d does auto booktype , for the benq search or ask in the optical drive forums here at freaks or pm alan1476 the moderator ...LMAO and ask him if there is any booktyping firmware available for the model of your benq drive tell him i sent you hehehehehe .

as for entering the layerbreak info in imgburn manually this is no longer required since version 2.0 it does it auto .. slow the speed to 2.4 or 4x and dont have any other options checked like verify etc and yes the layerbreak isalways the same 1913760 even in clonecd the layerbreak will read this

if there isnt a .dvd file then the iso will do .... i dont know about the downloads all i know is they must have the ss numbers patched otherwise they wont work but they should be done i guess or at least supplied

knock on wood, thanks once more. the disc i tried was dvd+r dl. so the only thing that the pioneer 111d actually does that my benq doesn't (And thus provides working xbox copies) is actually the AUTOMATIC setting of booktype? which if done manually in any dvd it just works?

btw nero info tool tells me that my burned dvd is recognised as "dvd video (dvd+r dl)". does this mean that i didn't set booktype right? :/

just a notice. looks like that i did a stupid thing. when in imgburn you go to change booktype and you have to select: change for: drive (for dvd+r dl media) and in new setting: dvd-rom?

ehm.. found some philips discs tonight, but since I dont have an xbox360 to test them I might as well write in both imgburn and clonecd. I don't know about how to set bit settings on clonecd. how can this be done? so that i go to my friend with two discs and see what happens...

knockonwood, also you didnt answer me, only difference between a pioneer 111d and a benq is the AUTOMATIC bitsetting? thanks again

Ok, I've been doing fine using .dvd files for burning with clonecd. What do I do with a .iso file ( not other files included ), clonecd doesn't recognize it, unless I drop down the search menu to "all files", and by burning that, I wind up with a coaster. Its nothing to do with speed or media or anything. What I'm asking is if anyone knows a good program to burn a single .iso, xbox 360 file that will actually play. I'm hoping one like clonecd exists.

OK here is my Issue, I've had 100% success rate with backing up my xbox 360 games in the past with the following media and hardware.

Ritek DVDplusR DL<<<---- 100% success
Poineer DVD-111D
Img Burn software
Ritek DVDminusR DL<<<--- 0% success

No problems in the past then I think I made a big mistake when I purchased my next set of blank media. I still went with Ritek, since I have had success in the past, but bought DVDminusR DL instead of DVDplusR DL. I didnt think the type of media mattered. We'll I found out real quick it did. With my first burn on the new media (DVDminusR DL), as soon as I press the start copy button I iimediately noticed a pop up window that said " cannot set layer break on DVDminusR DL media. But I decieded to keep going with the burn anyway. After the burn was completed I put it in the 360 only to see the white screen telling me to thats its not a correct format. I did this a couple of times until finally realizing the difference in my burns was I went from DVDplusR DL to DVDminusR DL. Knowing that I searched throuh numerous forum and found this topic. I know you guys said that V2.0 on ImageBurn was corrected to set it automatically but Im using V2.1 and it does not do that for media DVDminusR media it probably does for DVDplusR but not for minus media even after updating to v2.2 on imageburn. I have also went to setting and have change it to set the layer break to that specific number (19XXXX) indicated in this forum but still no luck. Can anyone please help me out. I paid 60 bucks for 100 of these DVD media and I dont want to put it to waste. Please I need any kind of help.

Not only that, you can't move the layer break position on DVD-R DL media.

Basically, it's just pretty useless!
