Don't forget Sony NEC Optiarc, I'd assume from what's been said their 18x drives are the best CD scanners still made. Although there 20x drives are LO made so you could include them in the list of deceased or almost. Ultimately CDs are outdated tech by now, although thanks to standards being squabbled about they aren't dead yet and the number of CD players in existence and being made will keep them alive for some time. It kind of amazes me more players haven't moved to flash based media yet.
On a side note what drives are good for TRTs on CDs? Normally I use my NEC, BenQ, or Pioneer for TRTs but NECs are good CD burners/scanners so I'm thinking they wouldn't be the best choice.

I can confirm that the DW1640 supports advanced CD-R scanning.

Just to add a side note to this thread, on faulty disc readability.

When my Benq DW1620 was new (now dead) I did some comparison scans with my Liteon 5239 and Plextor PX-W124TS.

Using Sony and Philips Test Discs I found that the lowest errors were produced by the Plextor.
In DAE tests the PX-W124 was able to retrieve unblemished music and tones from damaged/test discs that the other 2 could not. The Liteon was almost as good.

So I would suggest it is not that the Liteon is not showing the disc C2 errors, it is just better at getting the most information off the disc!

Same disc as in posts #18 , #22, #26 and #27 scanned in an Optiarc AD-7203A 1.06 at all scanning speeds plus TRT and ScanDisc.

This drive doesn't like this burn very much - the reported BLER in the part of the disc, that has not been deliberately damaged, is many times higher than in most other scanning drives.

DrageMester - Any thoughts about why the Optiarc AD-7200A isn't showing any C2 errors on this disc?

I have just got an AD-7200A partly because I was hoping to use it for scanning non-critical CDs and reduce the on my Benq. Although an Optiarc is obviously not in the same league as a Nexperia Benq for scanning CDs, I was counting on it being able to report E32 errors as C2 (I think I remember you saying that NECs/Optiarcs don't report E22 errors).

Probably because the drive isn't experiencing any C2 failures (E32) during that particular scan. You'll notice that the drive is capable of reporting C2 by looking at the 40x scan (and 20x scan for the 7203A). The drive is probably better at reading or correcting errors compared to some other (older) drives.

New rule, don't stay up too late browsing CDFreaks. When I looked at your scans last night didn't see any C2 errors.
