I'm thinking I should just get a plain old lite-on dvd-rom drive to just use for ripping and scanning. What do you guys think? Also, any specific recomendations for a drive just to use for ripping/scanning? Idealy I would want a fairly inexpensive drive that can still give good scans.

The NEC drives 3520 and up can do PI/PIF scans. The 25x0 will not be supported. The 3500 might be supported, but that's not sure for now. If the 3500 will be supported by means of a new firmware, there's a change that Liggy can port the PI/PIF code to a 25x0 firmware. But for the moment, it doesn't look very good. The only kind of scanning you can do for now on your 2500 is CD DVD-speed's transfer test, which can be very informative anyway.

You could consider upgrading your drive with one of Herrie's (www.herrie.org) firmwares, to allow DL writing on your drive and some other nice bonus features.

Instead of a Liteon DVD-ROM, you could also consider the AOpen 1648/AAP drive. It's a fast ripper which does all kinds of error scanning.

I currently have herrie's 2k5107v2b5d and will soon reflash it to 108v3-2.
I'll check out the AOpen drive. Thanks a ton for the info/suggestions!!

I found a bug in v3.80 when burning a data disc ISO

If I select options just to view them and without altering them. Then upon closing the options dialogue box the program crashes and leaves me with a partialy burnt disc

I noticed with PIE/PIF-scanning on my NEC 3540 that with some DVD's I can choose 1x, 5x, 8x, 12x, 16x or max as the scanning speed, while with others I can choose from 1x, 4x, 6x, 10x, 13x or max. Can anyone explain why this is?

I would ask could someone post a few results from different media test results, and write a comment on each of them.
I would like to know what is specially good in a test and what's wrong and why.
I'm referring special to the PIF and PIE results and the effect on the quality score.
I did read this thread but find it rather difficult to judge the graphs.
Perhaps there a few others who are interested in being explained what's going on.

I can't perform the "Disc Quality Test". This option has been disabled.

My writer is LG 4040b, A304 firmware.

Is there a problem with my dvd burner?? What other software can I use to perform the quality test??

joeld, welcome to cdfreaks

Unfortunately your LG drive does not support the quality test. It is a limitation of the drive, not CDSpeed. Here's a list of the supported drives:

First, the 3500 PI/PIF firmware has to be released. Then, Liggy has to succeed in porting the PI/PIF section to a 25x0 firmware, which seems to be a hell of a job! Then, CD DVD-speed has to support the new 25x0 firmware. But when the PI/PIF software comes from a 3500 firmware, chances are that CD DVD-speed will support the firmware in 3500 mode.

I agree and the image size can be huge, just click maximize.

On a brighter note, I like the new disc info and scandisc. Also the tabs are cool and save clicks

Thanks Erik for this great release. Version 4.0 looks cool...

We are many out there waiting for the new NEC ND-3500 PIE/PIF firmware. Is this version of CD/DVD Speed able to support that?
