Like moving from DOS to Windows , Perhaps

It just seems to me that they want you to rent instead of buy, if you got everything in the Cloud ( there servers ) then you will be renting not owning, and I think that is what they are after.

Windows 8 is for tablets and phones which mean mostly working off of the net, there servers them renting to you.

Like moving from DOS to Windows? In my opinion it's rather the other way round.

nothing indicates windows 8 will be better than 7..
we still have a TON of 32 bit software in the pipe.. more than HALF my apps are 32 bit.. millions upon millions of win7 machines run 32 bit o/s and/or 32 bit apps exclusively. the evolution's been slow as molases. now with android and ios muscling in.. microsoft's gonna have to update for the times.

Not at all ...
It's is moving from windows to a tablet, which seems awfully like moving from work to entertainment ...

So now when you want to draw a custom complex engineering widget, you fire up minecraft, and print your heavily ip protected widget through publlic servers so it can repackage it in proprietary format to be sent to your printer unencrypted across a non encrypted communications link, possibly via china and india, because god knows the tco of inastalliung/maintaining a 100gigabit link across land via asia will be orders of magniutude cheaper than a link between the usa /australia or USA/UK... what could possibly go wrong?

Games as work.. give every schoolchild an ipad ... they'll be surfing for porn before they can walk

One question?
How about, moving from Windows 7 to Arch Linux and avoiding the win8 OS?

I think there's a few problems with the statement.

It looks like windows 8 will be a pretty good OS for tablets and phones. It looks like it won't be all that great for pc's.

Are we going to see PC's phase out completely? I for one don't mind surfing the internet on my phone in a pinch, but I still prefer doing it at home on a full size screen with a mouse.

I think windows 8 will be polorazing. Windows phones currently make up a very small portion of the smartphone market. Will they gain enough traction to compensate for the revenue they are going to lose from the PC markets.

My prediction is that windows 8 will flounder. Microsoft will end up having to make two version's of their OS's. A Tablet version and a PC version. They've got so much bad press already for windows 8. Even moreso that than they had for vista.

Windows 8 might be a leapforward for tablets and phones but it's a leap back for PC's.

learning curve will be steep and the software switch will be a even bigger bite out of the budget could you just imagine all the software migration that would be have to be planned out just to migrate over and all the backup needed just incase something goes wrong.

I completely agree without some kinda bridge or learning needed W8 will be a flop. Cloud aka server Farms are only good as your connection and bandwidth lose either and forget about Cloud computing. There is a reason laptop will continue to exist in one form or another being as Cloud is only part of a network that works to insure that all the data continues to flow and work together loose the Cloud and your basically dead in the water unless your laptop has the backup files to keep going and that is where the laptop will always be KING a portable Cloud computer will all the software on it and ready to go. I like how people talk about Cloud Cloud but ask them what if the Cloud goes dead or the connection breaks will their business or clients wait....NO...they will go to someone that has it on their laptop. So anyone trying to dismiss laptop will not play a big role isn't really looking past the end of their nose. Also not everyone can afford to Cloud or have connection at the ready to go. So business have to have backup to backup when the Cloud fails to deliver the goods.

As far as the 'Cloud' (there servers) I myself will never use it, heck most data theft is not done through a persons computer but through the servers themselves, not only that can you imagine someone crafting a virus like the one sent to Iran's computers used in their nuclear facilities which deletes all data. I can just see the headlines now...

'Cloud used by millions around the world has mass data loss'

I think the "Rent-Constant-Subscriber" vs. "Buy" is the more salient point. Creating constant-pay-for addictions gives certain companies a belief in their future revenues as opposed to making a lasting product and selling it.

But DOS to Windows? I suspect it's more like a Thunderbird to an Edsel. (I love that Edsel pix - yuck green, rainy day and its top down. "All wet".)

Windows 8 RP is a plain and simple for tablets and phones and MS is very late getting into this market to even begin to catch up with Apples ipads and phones they are a lot too little too late.

Run it on your home desktop or laptop you have got to be kidding and with MS'S track record buy their own product line of tablets laptops with the security issues that MS has and using their cloud storage no thanks I had rather give my credit card numbers to a total stranger than trust MS with anything...LINUX anyone.

Actually the virus sent to Iran was more subtle....

The first one what it did was change the feedback from the motor speed controllers on their Uranium seperation centrifuges, so that the computer was believing the motor speed was significantly different than it was and this intentionally incorrect feedback caused the motor controllers to damage the motors and incorrectly seperate the material they were processing.

It only affected certain models of electronic motor controllers.
Motor controllers designed in the Ukrane and manufactured in China

And it kept re-infecting computers.

Combined with that when the head IT guy in Iran got close to a solution "somebody"rode up on a motorcycle and stuck a chunk of
steel plate backed with a sheet of explosive (Look up "Misznay–Schardin effect") to the side of his car which blew the chunk of steel plate through his car and incidentally through the IT guy himself....

the virus was distributed through ISB drives that were filled with MP3 files or AVI or MP4 Feature films and abandoned at bars, cafes public restrooms.

It was only natural that one of these drives would eventually find it's way into isolated secure systems that are not connected to the net in any way, shape or form.
