Undercover agents pursue inebriates in a pre-emptive strategy

SAN ANTONIO, Texas
- Texas has begun sending undercover agents into bars to arrest drinkers for being drunk, a spokeswoman for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said on Wednesday.

The first sting operation was conducted recently in a Dallas suburb where agents infiltrated 36 bars and arrested 30 people for public intoxication, said the commission’s Carolyn Beck.

Being in a bar does not exempt one from the state laws against public drunkenness, Beck said.

The goal, she said, was to detain drunks before they leave a bar and go do something dangerous like drive a car.

“We feel that the only way we’re going to get at the drunk driving problem and the problem of people hurting each other while drunk is by crackdowns like this,” she said

“There are a lot of dangerous and stupid things people do when they’re intoxicated, other than get behind the wheel of a car,” Beck said. “People walk out into traffic and get run over, people jump off of balconies trying to reach a swimming pool and miss.”

She said the sting operations would continue throughout the state.

No love, the only way you're going to do that is by banning driving, talk about criminalising the general public...

I agree with this. When you have seen the physical effects of an accident caused by someone who has drunk and driven, and had to deal with the emotional effects of telling a family their child has been killed, then you may be able to get away with sarcasim. Though I seriously doubt you will use it.

It does not matter how people try to fool themselves one drink can affect responses and response time, as alcohol is a depressant.

To me if someone kills someone while under the influance while driving they should be charged with murder and face whatever consequences that entails.

Believe me once you have heard the sound of a mothers scream after being told their child is dead it is a sound you will never get out of your head and is one of the worst I have ever heard.

Wow! That's pretty good ... but if they really wanted to be pro-active, they'd pre-emptively arrest people for public drunkeness if they even look at alcohol
