Re: The party is over for Hollywood as DVD sales slump This is the very old story...blame piracy while the business model is just changing. They couldn't keep the market growth rate for ever...as simple as that. Now they will try a new format, but the most important for them will be streaming video...and they look for the day everybody will be using video on demand. Dematerialized market in the sheepyard...and clients paying, paying, paying!!!

Re: The party is over for Hollywood as DVD sales slump I know piracy is a huge problem for the Movie industries. (music industries are pukes and they did it to them selves) Think, 1 person who knows how to dupe movies probally teaches 3-5 five people. Then half of those people teach other people and ect. ect. ect... Then you have web sites with really good forums (if not the best) that teach how to break protections and/or personal backup depending on the person. So if 1 web site teaches 1000 people how to make backups per year, then 40-50% of those 1000 people teaches 5 people each, then 40-50% of those people teach other people, then here comes the major problem. The problem isn't how many people to sue to stop piracy...it how to rally enough support through Congress and their customers to stop this now easy and cheaper way to get movies. The movie & music industries sue to get a point across, and the more rediculous this gets the more it starts to turn heads for their cause. Think, people are getting mad that their getting sued...then congress are getting hammered by consumers and copyright holders...Enough bitching, sueing, and money will be enough to get something passed trough congress. This is where DRM is beginning to come about of course. Every knows and hears of the consumers point of view...thats why I restrained from saying anything from thier point of view. But seeing both sides...the movie industries have a point, they advertise, every DVD plays in every DVD player, and bargin bins are in almost every store for 5 bucks or less (2 for $5). Totally reasonable! People have no excuse for copying Movies except for personal backup. IMHO Now the music industry is a different story. They rip off every one it seems including the artiests (I experenced it through BMG and Columbia tape clubs and ruined my credit before I was 17 and they are F*cking Liers IMHO and have bad experences to backup my claim). They are price fixing their music (IMHO), no stores have bargin bins for old outdated music, and they want top dollar for even the worst (least popualr) music. Then when you buy the cd at top dollar, most of the time you cant play them on your computer, some wont play in your car sterio or portable cd players, and could give you an invisibale DRM virus on your computer (want to reformat anyone?). They have made such a bad name for them selves that they out to be ashamed and embarrassed to conduct business in the United States to Americans. Now the music industries are wondering why they are not making as much money as they were in the past. I have no Idea why.

Re: The party is over for Hollywood as DVD sales slump "1 person who knows how to dupe movies probally teaches 3-5 five people" I have to say that is true. Some of us had to learn it on our own, but friends and others just had to ask for the "how to...". DVD sales are down cause how many movies can you own. Scarface just came out with like a 3rd Special Edition so far. How many DVD's of the same movie will you get? I also have a limited space to store the movies, so I'm not gonna buy everything but rather rent it instead.

Re: The party is over for Hollywood as DVD sales slump i don't think the piracy is the issue here; the problems is the low quality mastering, lousy new movies, and rental services like netflix because there are so many dvds with the quality so low that i felt like matching vhs versions via composite line, so i usually rent dvds from blockburster or netflix first those who collects pirated movies usually so cheap that they wouldn't buy dvds even if there is no pirated versions out there. the lack of features & quality on pirated movies make dvd buyers keep away from pirated versions & there are also inexpensive alternatives like blockburster.com or netflix.com that most movie watchers wouldn't turn to pirated versions

Re: The party is over for Hollywood as DVD sales slump I have no proof, but my logic tells me that 1 out of 2 people show others how to make backups on average. Perhaps im wrong but worked good to get a point across. Shuma02, yes..I didnt think of that. If they take all movie remakes, reauthor, directors cut, editors cut, and ect.. and take those and figure a ratio per movie that they expect to sell per edition...then their figures might come up short. Exceptions were like the titles 'Lord of the Ring" and the remakes of "Star Wars" or equilavent wich the banked alot of money from. And could have possibally raised the average of expectaitions from reauthored movies/directors cut.ect..

Re: The party is over for Hollywood as DVD sales slump I think they caused the decline themselves. Of course, there is some inaccuracy as they didnt count for umd and esp. online sales. But the real reasons IMO as follows: - poor content value (this year especially) - HD formats introduction - ppl do read papers and as they are told about the new movie format, they put on hold DVD purchases (good new movies and collectables) so that not to buy them again, like dvds after VHS. - annoying trailers and commercials - who wants to OWN it if it feels like spending hard earned cash for the stuff you dont want in the first place. Besides it is irritating to see every time u watch a classic movie. -DRM measures - yes, many want to buy it once and have it everywhere - car, cottage, i-pod and so on. Restricting only works against the sales as ppl opt for other sources. - high prices (for many) that cause piracy more than anything else. - and finally, distribution. Why on earth can I not buy "My Family" tv series the same time it is available in Britain? - there are probably more, but this is just my 2 cents.

Re: The party is over for Hollywood as DVD sales slump You don't need a "monster" screen to see the benefits of HD unless you have vision problems! Any HD monitor will show it, it depends more how far you sit from it.
