When the court determined that the actions by authorities was done illegally it was just a matter of time before such a allegation to be filed, this happens every time a court rules in favor of a defendant.

So no real surprise.

Sometimes, it's more about sending a message than actually doing the proper policing work to secure a suspect and have a successful criminal prosecution. Generally speaking law enforcement are immune to civil and criminal prosecution in the course of their duties even when they step over the line because it can be justified in some way.

However, as these viscious attacks on "pirates" continues to escalate, you can be certain that the pirates will become more militant about their rights and do whatever it takes to keep piracy thriving (and profitable) on the internet.

No under US laws you as Law enforcement break the law you loose all immunity against prosecution and you become the criminal being charge with the crime. So If US wants to follow the law then the assault by NZ police falls under US laws and they have no immunity to civil suites of Police state abuse.
