Latest News Headlines Discuss, How about having to pay ~$100 for each Sony PS3 game? at Community forum; I just love it when a company decides to shaft the consumer for its own failures. The article makes it clear the 'why' behind the price increase, and certainly won't make the PS3 nor its games fly off shelves. __________________ " Sic vis pacem para bellum " " Lo único

Yes, this has now been addressed, shadowfaxframe, and thanks for pointing this out. Even after a careful reading (I usually read an article 3 times during writing the article) after finishing up, the article doesn't directly say "this is only speculation" or "this is only an unconfirmed report," so there was no way from knowing this from the article itself.

I can only say that $60 USD is still a prohibitive cost for any game title. As far as I went on game consoles was a Sega when it first came out, and I thought paying $44.95 for Afterburner at that time was too high, but I did get great enjoyment out of it. Had it not been a gift, I would not have bought it, as it seems many game titles have also suffered from some kind of artificial price inflation, not consistent with costs and a reasonable profit margin.

Here's a link verifying the $59.99 price on Sony titles. While this was not posted when I wrote the article above, it was posted on Slashdot 10 hours ago.

That's what we pay in Australia for games and have done for years. Most xbox 360 games are $110, PC games $99, PSP games $79+ (psp movies $25-$39)and other console games are $99 and platinum ps2 games $39-$49

I partially agree with that, to the degree that Sony is 'distracted' it could be said and certainly is not hitting on all cylinders currently, given the fact several of its TV line are very well reviewed and one of its VCR/DVD player combos is well-reviewed. That said, Sony DVD media for example could be better in results, and the PS3 was rushed onto the market, yet failed dismally in achieving Sony's own goals, meaning project development, management and sticking to a timetable were all major shortcomings. The fact Sony TVs are well-reviewed means Sony can succeed if it puts its mind to it, but the lack of proper development and oversight in these cases is troubling. It's almost like the company itself is schizophrenic to the degree one department succeeds, yet two others are far from being successful to the same degree--and seem to have no clue how to improve.

I agree due to these things that Sony should not be trusted to create all products with equal quality, since noted products above have or have not been. To be fair, this is not only a problem Sony has, but many companies. So, the only way to be sure a product is a good decision to buy is to find online reviews of it (of course, the more there are the better decision one can make) and assume nothing about a product just because of its brand name. To drive this point home, I'll name some examples: Olympus has been noted to have several well-reviewed, quality camera models, but not all of them are as 'wonderful'; Fuji makes some great cameras (like the FinePix S5200), but the 2 predecessors to this model had many problems that disqualified them from being a good buy; one of the most notable and shocking turn arounds came from Plextor, who used to make ODDs that were all top-notch, but when it started with the 712 and 716 lines, it threw its former approach to guaranteed quality to the winds. Not long ago it had to merge with another company to stay afloat financially, obviously in large part to its carelessness with product and its consumer base. Assuming any company is an 'automatic shoe-in' in terms of all its products being a good buy is taking a lot of chances, because on the whole, companies are no longer concerned about customer service and manufacturing a quality product like they once were. It's now become almost solely a function of the 'bottom line,' so more and more companies try to cut corners where they can to increase profit, even sacrificing quality to do so. It's sad, but now the consumer must assume the responsibility for checking everything out one intends to buy, because companies have become more and more removed from the consumer.
