Is that odd or is that the norm? those discs playback ok but why is it taking 15 min. to burn. i'm wondering if they can't be burned @ 8x. any comments or advice will be appreciated. thanks in advance.

dvd_addict,
7 to 8 minutes is not 16X writing. 5-1/2 to 6:20 is. Sounds like the burn is slowing down to 12X or slower.
How did you get your burn time results? Do you have a log? & could you post it?
What burning program are you using?
What are your burn settings in the program?
I know these are dumb questions, but lets start here.

Double check DMA is enabled in Windows and/or the bios

In windows go to control panel->system->hardware->device manager and bring up the properties of the IDE controller channel the drive attached to and check the advanced tab so see if Ultra DMA 2 mode is enabled.

If DMA is on try another IDE cable or install your most recent chipset drivers and remove the 1620 from the device manager and let it reinstall.

Latest Intel chipset drivers

DMA is enabled. The IDE cable is brand new and I don't have INTEL APPLICATION ACCELERATOR installed on that pc. The drive is set to ULTRA DMA mode, connected to secondary primary master and the jumper is set to master. I'll have to test out the drive with other brands of media or use another ide cable. Thanks for the replies.

Re: why does a 4x dvd+r maxell disc burning at 8x takes 15 min. to burn??

obviously ur drive is only burning the 8x sony at ~12x if its done in 7-8mins

a real 8x burn takes me about 9-10mins

15mins is 4x burn so if it takes 15mins, ur burner is only burning it at 4x thus its prolly not supported

Re: why does a 4x dvd+r maxell disc burning at 8x takes 15 min. to burn??

What is the media code on the 4x disks? Are you sure they can be burned at 8x?

Here is what I have seen in burn times and I think most others have.

16x = 5:50 - 6:10

12x = 6:30 give or take 3 seconds is what I'm getting with 8x prodisk.

8x = 8:30

4x = 15:00

Media code is RICOHJPNR01. I did have one disc burned @ 8x in 7-8 min. I use NERO 6.6.0.1.

Oh, THAT media. That Ricoh used to be a good media.
My last 200 discs have had varying degrees of data integrity (varying from 100% is not good).
Anyway, head on over to cdspeed2000.com to pick up a recent copy of CD/DVD speed, and run the extras/quality test on some of the discs.
Post your scans so we can see what's going on.
