Thinking of Crossflashing Philips DVDRW+-8801 with BenQ 1650

BenQ / Philips Writer Discuss, Thinking of Crossflashing Philips DVDRW+-8801 with BenQ 1650 at CD, DVD and Blu-ray Writers forum; Pretty much what it says in the title. I'm pretty new at this and I have no idea how to get my DVDRW drive working again without buying a new one. Help?

Are you saying it's not currently working at all and you hope crossflashing to a new firmware will help?

well it's kind of a weird story. Now I know when I reveal certain details you'll think that the problem is kind of unsolvable, but I have hope that it's not that dire. So my DVD+-R has stopped working about 2 weeks ago and I have certain ideas as to why. I think it's because I've been fumbling about with programs like Alcohol 120, powerISO, and MagicISO without any problems. Then one day I put in my half-life 2 cd and no autorun came up so I went to My computer and it no longer had my DVD drive listed. So into device manager I go. I get a Code 39(driver is missing or corrupted). I manually uninstall the drive, then restart windows, hoping the standard driver would do, and it came back in my computer, but still ceases to read any type of media I place into the drive. I'm hoping a new driver or firmware can maybe help rectify this problem. I'd really hate to go get a new drive knowing mine worked fine just a couple weeks ago. Oh if it helps, my drive came with my Dell Dimension E510. Thanks again

    Hi and Welcome!

This problem can't be fixed with flashing firmware. Your Windows installation is totally messed up, possibly due to some virus-like copy protection crap. If you try flashing any firmware, your drive may get killed.

There are some really useful sticky threads in the general "Optical Drives" section concerning troubleshooting. Read them carefully and see, if you can fix your problem with the information given there.

If anything else fails: Formatting the harddrive and reinstalling Windows should help.

hey, thanks for the quick replies!

You know I think I might have to completely format, but there's a problem with that too. Dell didn't include a disc with windows media center on it which came installed. I have an old copy of Windows XP home, but that'd be better than nothing yes? The reason formatting sounds like a good idea, is well you know the volume icon in the taskbar? It wasn't there either so I went in through control panel to make it appear on the taskbar and when I went to check the box telling the pc to place the icon in the taskbar always, it said the feature hadn't been installed when a week earlier it was sitting there in the taskbar. So what should I do? If I format, how would my drive read my windows CD? That's the only thing stopping me, if I format and the drive isn't reading ANYthing, how could I reinstall windows? Thanks again!

A first check is to try if your PC still can boot from a bootable cd, e.g. your old windows CD (do not install it, just try to boot). If this works at least the cd part of your drive is still alive. If windows can not read this cd, we have to look at your software config.

Alright, I think I'm SOL. I put my windows XP home cd into the tray then told the computer to restart. Normally, it would've brought up the partition/format/install etc. Window correct? Not here. I think my drive is completely fubared but it was working fine a couple weeks ago, I'm completely stumped now. Thanks for the quick replies again, but is there anything else I can do? Oh and as far as the software config, what kind of diagnostic program should I use to give you the most comprehensive details?

here's what device manager says. I'm pretty sure location 0 isn't too good.

Only if it's set in the BIOS to boot from CD before Hard Disk.

Don't know, often it's briefly shown which key to press to enter the BIOS (usually it's Delete). Look for something like "Boot Priority".

Alright, now I'm almost certain it's a hardware problem. I changed the boot order to have the CD drive boot first, and the sound I get, well it's pretty much an onomatopoeia. Spinnnnnn-click-click-click. Spinnnnnnn-click-click-click. Spinnnnnn-click-click-click. And then I get back to windows booting. That's all I got. I'm outta luck here I think.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Now as for a course of fixing this dilemma, what should/can I do?

Isn't it under warranty any more? It's a pretty recent drive, isn't it? If the laser's dead there's not much you can do with it.

Actually I think it's past my 90-day warranty. Yeah I think the drive is just completely dead. I was thinking of getting this one, that is if I decide to order it and wait.

I also have an E510 and it came with a Philips DVD8801 (see my signature). My computer came standard with a 1 year warranty....didn't you get the same? From what you've said, I think there's a good chance Dell might help out.

Actually I think my warranty is void because I got a refurbished E510. Now I called my local Hastings store because we have a severe lack of technology vendors where I live, and they had 2 models of dvd burners in. One was a LiteOn, and another which I guess is a Coby or something. I've heard of LiteOn, would that be a reliable drive to buy or should I hold out and order a Sony? I'll try to contact Dell, but what would they do? Send me a new drive? Thanks again

Well it'd still be nice to get my original burner working again but I think everyone here agrees that it's shot. No matter, I ended up buying the drive here http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=260039110632. One more question, can someone look this drive up(I tried but came back with zip) and tell me whether it was a smart buy or not? Only around $40 so I think it was worth it. Let me know! Thanks again.

With so many drives on sale @ retailers these days for $30 or under I wouldn't bother going trough ebay for buying the dive but since you have already taken this step you might as well enjoy it Sony is good drive also and it has the fastest and latest burning speed also. Good luck and happy burning.
