Suggestions to BenQ and/or Philips Engineers

BenQ / Philips Writer Discuss, Suggestions to BenQ and/or Philips Engineers at CD and DVD Writers forum; i'm sure its been said but it would be nice to have an official firmware that let users write MKM 001 Verbatims at 8x instead of being limited to 2.4x. I have a BenQ1650. __________________ Member of http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php? My rig: Sony cmt-se1/NEC WGX2 hooked up to mds-jb980/hooked up to optical

When burning a DL disc (RITEKD01 in particular, pack of 50 Memorex DL discs) the drive will sometimes give a write error as soon as it starts recording the 2nd layer. Out of 4 discs I've tried: (all recorded at 2.4x)

(1) BSMB WOPC on: fail
(2) BSOB WOPC on: OK
(3) BSOB WOPC on: fail
(4) BSOB WOPC off: OK

I've read somewhere on this forum about successful DL burns being obtained only with WOPC off, it may be the case here, I'd need to try a few more discs to make sure.

With the new firmware BCHC for the DW 1650 I can still write (=destroy) my High Speed CD-RW (rated 10x) at 48x!

It doesn't effect many, I know but why oh why is 2X DVD-R burnt at 2.4X?

This is surely the reason why all my TDKG02 000000 turn into beer mats.

How hard can it be to write dash media to spec?

This "bug" effects ALL...

But all these facts has been known for years now, although BenQ/Philips has sofar done nothing to it.
4x burning is the lowest safe write speed on any -R/-RW media.

Thanks pinto2.

By "doesn't effect many" I was meaning that not many people would have a great deal of 2X dash media they needed to burn.

A burn using the 1650 @2.4X produces a complete coaster of PIE Max ~600, PIF Max 40 with shocking averages and totals, but crossflashing to Philips 1660 produces perfectly passable burns @ 2.4X!

Tried every combination of SB OS and WOPC with the BenQ firmware. I thought overspeeding to 4X may work, but the write just failed. Default settings for the Philips (SolidBurn on for all, WOPC locked @ on ( without assistance and OS off) worked fine!

Probably an issue that has been covered before, but it would be nice for the DW1650 and DW1655 to be able to burn well a greater variety of DVD+R DL media... Right now only Verbatim DL discs seem to produce good results, and as we all know they are still quite expensive. It would be nice to have a firmware that improves burning quality in PHILPS-CD2 and RICOHJPN-D00-01 media. All my burns on such media have been catastrophic so far. Haven't tried any CMC-MAG-D01 or RITEKD01 media yet, (and most likely won't as I'm fed up producing expensive DL coasters... )

As probabaly would have been reiterated by some for many times, apparently no 12X CD-RW could be used on my 1650; only some 4X 'gold' CD-RW could survive.

While the CD tray is probably among the best I have seen, the front panel left much to be desired. The eject button feels filmsy make every push a guess; travel of button is so small and non-tactile makes me almost have to re-push on every other use.

The surface texture of the panel is so fine and shiny that makes it looks cheap and toy feel.

Probable the most funny thing is the right most logo on the panel, it actually deepens the exacerbation on its CD-RW compatibilities. And I really dont understand why they choose to put in such a logo and let go of a 'DVD-R/RW' logo, this is a DVD drive afterall. The 1670 probably have much improvement in these respects.

BenQ DW1640 (Tested for BSKB and later firmware)
Read error for 700M CDRW, work perfect for 640M CDRW.
The only way to read 700M CDRW is using dump it as an image and mount by virtual CD manager.

Hi, i own/owned many dirves. I have/had 3 LG, 3 Benqs, 4Philips, 2NEC, 1Pioneer, 2 Sony, 1Samsung.

Over the past say 3 years. And for me Benq is the best of them all.
But i would also like them be the fastest of them all. I know you can get fast burns using the Qsuite options but its still not in the speed class of the LG-4163/4167/H10/H20.

So my suggestion is to implement 8x, 12X AND 16X SPEED P-CAV into the burners. This will enable them to be as fast as LG and keep the king seat in the overall dirve standings. Obviously the quality will need to improve but this will better the overall perfomance of the drive on slower burns too..

SO BENQ ENGINEERS,,, THINK ABOUT P-CAV BURNERS,,, SPEED AND QUALITYS WINS ALL HEARTS !!!!!!!!!!

my suggestion is focus on quality not speed using old burn curves.

Ok, here's a real firmware bug for you. It effects my 1640 and 1655, not sure about earlier models, I didn't try any.

When burning a simple single track/session ISO, switching SAO (having already sent the Cue Sheet) to TAO doesn't work, it still uses Cue Sheet values resulting in a 'End of User Area Encountered on This Track' error.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Tell the drive to burn using SAO via the 'Write Parameters' mode page.
2. Send Cue sheet.
3. Tell the drive to burn using TAO via the 'Write Parameters' mode page.
4. Start writing.

It will fail on the last block of sectors you try to burn (in my case, I burn 32 at a time).

Example of failure:

(Please note, here I am forcing a fall back to TAO after SAO 'Send Cue Sheet' fails - again, on purpose)

Code:
I 10:27:05 Operation Started!
I 10:27:05 Source File: C:\TEST.ISO
I 10:27:05 Source File Sectors: 1,991 (MODE1/2048)

I 10:27:08 Writing Image...
W 10:27:10 Failed to Write Sectors 1984 - 1990 - End of User Area Encountered on This Track
...and if I remove the call to 'Send Cue Sheet', here's an example of it working as expected:

(Here I'm starting directly with TAO burning rather than trying SAO and reverting if it fails)

Code:
I 10:32:19 Operation Started!
I 10:32:19 Source File: C:\TEST.ISO

The BenQ drives are the only ones that have a problem with going SAO -> TAO.

I've tested Plextor, Pioneer, NEC, LG, LiteOn and of course BenQ.

current works fine for my needs

don't count on getting any new firmware from either benq or liteon though
i checked a few benq sites last night no link to dvd-rewriter firmware / selection & products still lists 1650 & 1655 but firmware link only has firmware checker
no firmware added to liteon's site as far as i can tell
always thought liteon would bury the benqs on takeover unless its a website glitch then its happeneing.. so much for my 2 year warranty

Are Benq thinking of venturing into the 18xDVD-+R world as the plextor and the samsung have. Both drives can produce very good backups @ full speed and i feel they have hit on a tecnology that is superior in its writing quality (at high speeds). I would look at the plextor more as its the better drive but the samsung is the fastest.

Just an idea.

This question would maybe be better adressed to Philips...
And if we are looking at general trend in market, (I have Blue-Ray drives in mind), then the SL+R/-R burn speeds are even going to be lower in future...

Whoever is responsible for developing "BenQ" drives, (with Philips chipset) would better be spending the time to improve 16x write strategies even more.

BTW, I'm quite happy with my BenQ's burning at 16x in sub 5:30...

Hi pinto2, I dont think the blu ray/HD DVD will hit the computers for at least 1 year maybe two. I mean really catch on like dvd drives have. They are far too expensive and only the rich can endulge but when they hit £100 mark they will cause a freenze.

I totaly agree with you on the imporving the 16x write strategy on the benq drives, but my thought is when you prepare a technology for burning at 18x speed (it would be different from normal 16x speed burning methods) the the new method would be an imporvement on the lower 16xspeed quality. well i would like to think so anyway.

I am having so much luck with burning I ordered two more BenQ 1655's for my son's and wife's computer....

But, this lightscribe communication error and NERO should be posted in your support forum with the information oin how to fix it. (Including the Lightscribe engine uninstall tool). That would really be nice since your support area seems rather weak.

Just out of curiosity ... why would anybody need to burn a DVD faster than 8x or 12x for that matter? And any faster than 24x for a CD?
