Howdy. I installed an OEM BenQ DW1620 drive about a month ago and it's been acting very unpredictable. It is now essentially unusable. More often than not, the drive will not recognize any standard Hollywood movie in it and it will burn successfully only 25% of the time. When it does do a burn to completion, it burns perfect, but the majority of the time it won't recognize the blank media or it burns partially and stops due to fatal errors. I am hoping maybe some has some ideas what my problem might be...

Some background:
  • Dell Computer Corporation Dimension 4600i
  • 3.00 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
  • 8 kilobyte primary memory cache
  • 512 kilobyte secondary memory cache
  • 119.99 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity (ST3120026AS [Hard drive] (120.00 GB) -- drive 0) with 74.14 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

  • ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16 [CD-ROM drive]
  • TEAC DVD+RW DV-W58E [CD-ROM drive]
  • 3.5" format removeable media [Floppy drive]

  • Board: Dell Computer Corp. 0F4491
  • Serial Number: ..CN481113CA00J6.
  • Bus Clock: 800 megahertz
  • BIOS: Dell Computer Corporation A12 08/26/2004
  • 1536 Megabytes Installed Memory
    • Slot 'CHANNEL A DIMM 0' has 512 MB
    • Slot 'CHANNEL B DIMM 0' has 512 MB
    • Slot 'CHANNEL A DIMM 1' has 256 MB
    • Slot 'CHANNEL B DIMM 1' has 256 MB
- The first thing I did when I got the drive was put G7P9 Firmware on it.
- The media I use is Sony DVD+R V1.1/1X-4X
- DVD Identifier V3.6.1 sez:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:RICOHJPN-R01-002]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [Not Available]
Manufacturer Name : [Ricoh Co. Ltd.]
Manufacturer ID : [RICOHJPN]
Media Type ID : [R01]
Product Revision : [002]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4,482.6MB = 4.38GB (4.70GB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x , 2.4x , 4x]

NOTE: I have tried different kinds of media in the BenQ drive and I see the same problem. Other media I have tried is Memorex (I don't know it's Manufacturer ID) and Longten Technology Co. Ltd. [LONGTEN] media and I see the same problems.

Further note that I also have a TEAC DV-W58E burner (running firmware D.0C) that I bought from Dell over a year ago and that drive works awesome. While I've been very happy with the TEAC drive, I bought the BenQ drive based upon the high ratings from this forum and reviews. After more than a month with this BenQ drive, I'm still using the TEAC drive for my burns due to the DW1620 flakiness.

The behavior of the DW1620 has been bizarre. Sometimes it won't recognize any standard DVD (ie, an out-of-the-box original Hollywood movie), has never been able to burn to a CD-R, often THINKS it burns successful to a standard DVD-5 disc, but when the disc is played or analyzed, there's nothing on it. Other times it will stop with some form of "fatal error". I don't know what the problem is. I just recently tried burning off a home authored movie (from my Sony "Handycam" DCR-TRV38) and Nero gave me some of the usual errors.

Below, I have the complete log output from Nero (running 6.6.0.5). Note that I also often use DVD Shrink (which directly interfaces with Nero) and see the same problems.

Can anyone help? Thoughts?

Here's the log output:

Of course I dont know for sure, but I guess you are also one of the happy customers suffering from BenQ insufficient quality control ... I would say your drive is dying. Bought a month ago appears to fit in the picture some people here (like me) have.

Obviously BenQ produced until Aug 2004 were fine, Sep 2004 was mixed and since them there are many having quality issues. I think there is no chance than to RMA it, if you can rule out other hardware problems (especially PSU) and of course, software problems. If you did not change or add recording software and have no virus, it must be a hw failure.

Regards.

Just curious, can you post the mfg date and place of mfg?

You could try doing a DOS flash back to L9 then reboot and flash in DOS up to P9 or T9, this has fixed some problems.

is the teac and benq on the same ide cable...if not try a new 80 pin ide cable..see if this helps and I agree with rdgrimes..flash B7L9 and then flash back up to P9

suppsedly the benq works best with the 80 pin ide cables not 40 pin that many use with optical drives..this is the cable used on ATA100/133 hard drives

Off hand, I don't know. Can you offer advice on how I can determine this?

I hate to sound like such a....newbie...but... Can you again offer advice on how I would do this? I remember downloading G7P9 from the BenQ website and following the instructions. How do I do a "DOS flash back to to L9"?

Thanks again for your continued help.

Thanks for the info. For the record, I am using an 80-pin IDE cable and my TEAC and BenQ drive are on different controllers.

Hmmm? Please specify what "controllers" your drives are on.

For info and files for flashing fiirmware, go here. For the DOS flashing tool, go here

It's pretty basic:
  • IDE Primary Master : TEAC DV-W58E
  • IDE Primary Slave : none
  • IDE Secondary Master : BenQ DW1620
  • IDE Secondary Slave : none
I have a SATA 120GB hard drive...so no IDE for it.

Thanks for the firmware links above. I'll check 'em out and try reverting to other firmware as suggested.

Looks like August 2004. Doesn't specifically say where it was manufactured, but here is a pic of the underside label.

Haha...for those who care... I noticed that the tray on my DW1620 drive wasn't working now. It wouldn't open at all. Not through the button on the front nor from the "eject" pulldown menu option in windows...the drawer wouldn't budge. Sheeshhh...another problem.

I just sat in frustration and worked on something else. A few hours go by and out of the blue, the drawer just pops open half-way and stops. I look at it and it just sits there doing nothing. So, I hit the eject button thinking it would fully open the drawer. It did nothing. I pushed the drawer closed.

Later, I reboot my computer and find that Windows XP is hanging on boot-up with a bare black screen. Just a single cursor blinks for about 30 seconds in the upper left. Scary. I also notice the DW1620 drive green light is blinking on and off while XP is figuring out how to boot. Eventually XP boots up. I do some work on the computer, and leave for a few hours.

I come back and find my computer had automagically shut itself down. I reboot and again expierence Windows XP hanging at boot with the blinking cursor and the DW1620 drive light blinking...but now it doesn't boot at all. After a few minutes...scaringly enough...I smell smoke! Yep. I turned my comptuer off, opened up the case and remove the IDE BenQ drive and indeed it was quite warm and had a "burnt electrical" smell.

After removing it, my computer is happily working like normal again. So...I will try and return this puppy to my seller on ebay. With situations like this, this can make ebay buying a bit difficult...I don't even know if this guy will take it back, but the seller is apparently a dealer, so he should.

Some questions...
  • To be honest with the seller, I did put G7P9 firmware on it. As I did download this directly off the BenQ website and it was written for the DW1620 drive, is it true this is a supported firmware version (ie, having that on the drive won't void a warranty)?
  • And my next question...do you folks recommend I should get another DW1620 drive? As you can probably understand, I'm a bit unsure... I originally bought a Plextor to supplement my TEAC, but hated it due to media incompatibility problems. How can I be sure I get a good replacement BenQ drive?
Ya'll rock out there. Thanks for the help.

It is absolutly ok to upgrade your initial G7C9 (see sticker) of your bulk drive to G7P9 with the official Benq flasher.

Hi all,

did you look at the current ratings on the label?
The BenQ website gives ´em as "5V - 0.8A" and "12V - 1.9A" in the specs.
But the label reads "5V - 1.6A" (!!!) and "12V - 1.8A"?

EDIT: Data from German or UK website - Global or Europe says
"Power Requirement
+5V ± 5%, ripple: 100mVpp
+12V ± 10%, ripple: 200mVpp"

They give ripple but not peak/average requirement? Strange.

Either the specs on the website are wrong - or there was some kind of change in the drive sometime?

EDIT: Esp the doubled(!) 5V rating looks troublesome to me, as many people´s PSU 3.3V / 5V lines (which have a combined power rating much lower than the PSU´s one) are near maxed out - esp AMD users should know "the more 5V the better".

About flashing: Always read the "Unofficial Firmware" thread first if there are questions and visit the unofficial firmware page. As long as you stay with G7x9 fw (good idea if you are not sure whether you may need to turn the drive in again) you dont need dos flashers/win flasher but just go with the BenQ flasher. While I definitely want to go to retail fw sometime, I do not plan to do that before I really have to. P9 was fine with my BenQ until I had to RMA it.

I'd definitely flash to G7P9 or G7T9 to verify the drive is in fact working correctly. Plus the fact until B7U9 gets released at least G7T9 should match B7T9 as far as working conditions go outside of maybe missing a few of the bells and whistles B7T9 gets with the utilities and such.

Can only say that with G7P9, PIE/PIF/POF scanning and QScan worked fine. So this is not a reason to crossflash to Retail. Only that G7T9 found at shuttle.com appears not to support the Quality Scanning ...

I agree, if I have a bulk drive, I will go with bulk firmware as long as I do not get major advantages from Retail - which Retail T9 opposed to Bulk T9 apparently has, but if I get good burns with P9 and dont do DL, G7P9 would be my fw rev of choice for a while...

Dont worry ... I needed some time until I found that tiny little printing too (especially because I checked when the drive was already built in ... my LED pen flashlight is one of my best friends for example to see whether my case fans are running etc.)

Guys, no need to continue the discussion about which firmware to take for a drive with a burnt out hardware .

My drive got quite hot as well and was flaky at best, so I rma´d it. I do not think BenQ would check the PROM of a melted/burned drive, but I think I would feel better if I still had the "correct" fw branch on it when sth like that happens! A drive where smoke is coming out? Thats something new to me (and really scary)!

Of course, spooks appears to be on the safe side with the G7P9 fw ... *if* the eBay seller takes the drive back. Hope he does, spooks! Good luck.

@Spooks:

Sorry to hear about your drive. I had a similar experience with my first philips branded 1620 in November.....total tray malfuction, buring smell, system wouldn't boot until I physically removed the drive etc. I bet our drives had exactly the same problem.
I got a new 1620 that has been a dream ever since. So I hope your RMA process goes smoothly.
Gotta love the terror you feel when it smells like your is computer burning

I can also express my sorrow concerning the problems you're having with your BENQ. My first BENQ only lasted 1 hr post installation, the TRAY wouldn't open so i RMA back the drive for a replacement. The replacement is kicking
Arse with quality burns so don't give up on Benq just yet.
Peace!!!

Thanks, oman. So, far it's not going well.

Does anyone know if there is any way to return a faulty drive directly to BenQ (or an authorized agent)? What is someone to do when the seller is not taking responsibilty to assist with an RMA?

note... the seller is a business (and not an individual).

If the drive is bulk/OEM I guess there is no way to deal with BenQ directly ... but maybe try to email the support and ask them. They can tell you for sure, but normally with OEM stuff the dealer/reseller is responsible for that.

I dont know where you are and about laws there, but in Germany, an eBay seller who is a professional has no possibility to get out of warranty requirements! A recent lawsuit confirmed this in a case where the seller was a professional but tried to make a "private person sale" of his ebay activities.

Even an individual seller must give 2 years of warranty if he does not post a kind of "this is a private sale and i do not give you warranty" statement in the eBay posting IIRC.

Again, this is EU law so I am not sure how much of this applies to your case.
