I'd rather be happy with 2.4x burns than pissed off with coasters because of whatever reason.

i never understand when people get upset that they can't overspeed their media with good results.

you're using 2.4x media...anything higher than that is like a bonus! If you want to burn at 8x, you should purchase the MKM 003s.

(that being said, I'm waiting for brokeback to come out on tuesday so i can give an 8x DL burn a try )

haha but of course!

i'll waste one disc. i don't expect a good burn, but it's too tempting not to try. (that's why i'm a cdfreak )

2.4x is my "safe" speed for DL backups, but who doesn't like to experiment once in a while. I'm sure I'll end up having to reburn it at the slwoer speed anyway.

Three burns from the weekend, all by DW1655 at 6x CLV.

Burned with DVD Decrypter because it splits data equally between layers.

I would prefer to use CD-DVD Speed to show write speed, but with a less than full disc, it basically crams layer 0 full of data, leaving layer 1 half full, and then fills the rest of layer 1 with some junk [you can observe the drive writing after the data has ended, to fill all of 8152 MB]. There are two unnecessary downsides to this: it takes longer to burn and it uses the disc all the way to the outer edge where reading and writing is less reliable.

Well, here they are. [As you can see, I am still experimenting with scanning speeds.]

I burn ISO images with either DVD Decrypter or CD-DVD Speed.

There is one thing I change in DVD Decrypter settings that may make a slight difference in burn quality, so, maybe it's not exactly off topic.

I increase the 'Buffer Size' in the 'I/O' tab to the maximum of 256 MB to make sure there are no interruptions in data flow during burning. This is a little insurance in case I accidentally cause substantial activity on the drive that reads the data being burned. At 12-16x, 256 MB buys me about 15-20 seconds to notice the drive working harder than normal and either complete or kill an operation before it causes the DVD Decrypter buffer to deplete.

The consequence of allowing the buffer to become empty, even if only instantaneously, is that the drive is forced to interrupt the burn and resume it some [tens, hundreds of] milliseconds later, at an approximate spot not perfectly aligned with the end of the track at the point of interruption. The precision of this process has improved in newer drives but it still causes a gap in the recording that has to be taken care of, on the reading side, by error-correcting hardware, and in many cases, shows up as extra PIEs and PIFs in error scans, especially with -R media where track sync is a little harder due to the discrete nature of the markers used to measure position along the track in the -R format.

I recently got a new DW1655 (retail box, BCDB firmware) from NewEgg. The damn thing won't write to the second layer of DVD+R DL discs. I have tried Ritek DVD+R DL (RICOHJPN D00) 2.4X media and Verbatim DVD+R DL (MKM 001) 2.4X-6X media. The DW1655 doesn't offer 4X or 6X for the Verbatim media, but that really doesn't matter if it won't even write at 2.4X.

QScan reports that the Ritek media should not be used, but it says the Verbatim media is OK.

My old Pioneer DVR-108 burns the Ritek and Verbatim media at 2.4X successfully. I've sent info to BenQ tech support, but I haven't heard anything yet.

The Benq 1655 is not on the compatibility list at Ricoh website even though the strategies for the D00 and D01 are shown in the speed listing of fw BCDB as produced by MCSE.
http://www.ricohpmmc.com/uk/products...tibility8x.asp

Mine also cannot write on the second layer on the 8X D01 both at 6X and 8X while my 1640 can.

It looks like Ricoh is trying to pad their stats. "NEC, ND-4550A, 1.26, 8X" is listed twice.

my first three Dl burns with the 1655 bcdb with ala42 verbatim mkm 001 write strategy switch all with wopc on andSB and OS off- The first one was at 8X(56%) and the second 2.4X(96%) both with written with imgburn the third 8X (95%)iwth dvd decrypter. Is it odd that I had better luck with the DVD depcrypt at 8X than with imgburn?

Two Verbatim-branded MKM 001, DW1655 at 4x, burned by DVD Decrypter.

New pack, lower quality than before. I am hesitant to go above 4x with these.

See example below. This is a pressed disc that I bought for $1 at the rental place because it was hacked. Not only did it play fine in 3 of my 4 players, I had to use DVDFabExpress to back it up since the older decrypters choke on read errors!
