Just curious why the standard of scanning speed for Liteon drive is 4x while BenQ drive is 8x.

Will a 8x scan for both drives provide better comparison?
Also, 4x scan is a bit too time comsuming for a full dvd.

Wow! The 1640's burn TYG02's with YUDEN000 T02 like PIE totals. Very nice burn. I wish the 1620's could burn TYG02's with PIE's that low.

I agree about the time but I just let it run in the background, while I'm at work.

The 1693S is actually quite good at scanning at 8x but the standard for Liteon drives was set way back, to 4x, for several reason:

1/ The drive had CLV 4x reading ability.
2/ The top read speed of the drive was 6x.
3/ Any speed above 4x produced weird spikes.

I've been tempted for some time to suggest the MkII 3 series drives (1673S/1693S) start using 8x but it would make comparisons to the 1633S and 1653S differcult.

Mediacode: TYG02
Burner: Benq DW 1640 FW BSJB
Software: DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0
Burnspeed possible: 8x

Seems that TY -R is the best media for the 1640.
The BSJB firmware brought much improvement.

Thank God this drive is a very good 8X burner with a potential for higher speeds

That's good because I've got some other media types to display

Unbranded TTH02 16x DVD-R media, burned at 12x with BSJB

This media is very good for it's price

Here's a couple of SONYS11 4x DVD+RW scans using BSJB

The first burn was full erased using the 1640 and the second burn was full erased using the Liteon 1693S... yawn...

PIE values 20-99 are 'very good' by consensus here. Lower PIF would be nice, but that's likely quite normal for this mid (and I don't remember there being a consensus on PIF values, although lower is always better). Read transfer is fine, so I suppose this would be considered a 'good' media to have on hand. If that is the 16x DVD-R Verbatim media, it might do even better on PIF to be burned at 12x, but I don't know that for sure.

Hi
Thanks Quema34
The discs are Infiniti (redarded by some as poor man's Verbatim but they cost less than half the price)& yes some improvement can be seen at 12x although this doesn't seem consistant

Hey Quema34, which consensus? This one in Plextor faq? I think it was meant for the plextor people, since there is no way that Plextools can show quality score thus someone came with an idea to have bad/good/very good/excellent score for Plextools scans.
