| Hi People, After reading many threads here at dcfreaks, (what a great forum - congrats), I decided to buy a Phillips DVDR 1640k (black). The unit was delivered Sat. 5th Feb. It had B2.5 firmware. I flashed it in safe mode under WinXP (SP1) with B7T9.cvt using WinDWFlash.exe. The flash seemed to go well and I rebooted. The Drive was now recognised as a BenQ. EDIT: (Pressed submit instead of Preview ) I used a Verbatim 8X MMC 003 for my first burn, and was really pleased with the result. The BenQ is surely a great burner! Attached is an image of the disc quality test. Hope it shows up, not sure how to post it. Thanks to all for guiding me along the right (BenQ) path. Regards. EDIT 2: Forgot to mention the disc was burned at 8X, after QScan told me it was unsuitable for burning at any higher speeds. |

| Passable scan - can't complain about that for 11 cents per disc, hehe.

| I think the scan on the 11 cent meida is probably overall very good...max is 12 PIF and I bet if it is a movie it will play fine....longevity on cheap media is more an issue just do not forget in the BenQ forums the std is very high.... the BenQ on good media produces excellent scans so by the stds around here it is ok...but overall good I would no worry so much on the error/failure as much as overall media quality for the longevity esp if you are putting critical data etc on the discs I picked up TY02 8x dvd+r 2 spindles excellent quality media.... I burn at 16x as test of burner abilities but I think 12x is best for this media and any data backups, image backups are done at 12x(movies are done at 12x/16x)...and feel pretty secure these will stand the test of time.... of course no one knows for like 20 yrs duration but for near future(few yrs) time frame

| Media: Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL (MKM 001) Burner: BenQ 1620 Firmware: B7T9 (official) Recording software: Nero 6 BitSetting: DVD-ROM Type of disc burned: A full video DVD (7.91GB) Recording speed: 4x Scanning software: Nero CD-DVD Speed 3.61 Scanning speed: 4x Comments: First layer was great, but the 2nd layer has a high rate of PI Errors and PI Failures. At £5 ($9) a disc its difficult for me to try a few times to see if this will allways happen.

My standalone is a Panasonic DVD-S47, it is VERY picky. It wont play DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW (It will play the +R with BitSetting). I will try it in my friend's cheap standalone, see if it plays in there. Ben

| Few days ago I ran a scan and got a decent result. I ran a scan today and the result is scan 1. I checked this on another pc and foundthe same spike at th 0.4 mark. Then cleaned the disk ( with a music CD cleaner !!) and scanned again - scan 2. I'm sure that with a little more careful cleaning I could get the figure back to its original 98%. Has anyone with really good scans rescaned some days or weeks later ? My guess is that if the DVD has been watched a few times, handled by several people the scans will not look quite so good. Again I would guess that most of the scans being seen are based upon newly recorded disks ? Does anyone have any suggested ways to clean DVDs ? I don't mean sandpaper or wax - which I would class as repairing DVDs - but what is the best way to simply remove dust, finger prints etc ? |

| This is a Benq 8X+R burned at 16X on 1620@B7T9. What do you guys think? It qualifies for a coaster? It reads back on my NEC 3500 at full speed fine though. |

| I just hate this nasty ol' media! 12X - 6:18 - MCC004 - 1620@B7T9......... If you're tired of media testing, f/w questions and flashing, reading 1000's of post, and of course hardware testing: IDE Cables, Master/Slave, Drivers! Forget 'bout the BS and stick to good media............ Regards-

| Hi Could someone help me out here? Something has got to be wrong; probably something with the IDE connection. Just to let you know, the BenQ drive is connected via a IDE PCI Controller, after just realising to install some software for the controller I can find out what connection it is connected at, the program reports that the drive is connected at MDMA 2 and says it is connected with a 80pin cable? The card is the following http://www.siliconimage.com/products/product.aspx?id=31 Having looked, ive realised the drivers I have installed are 3 years old, this could be the problem, will update and report back. The media burnt is FUJIFILM DVD+R YUDEN-T02. Mark
