Here are my first burns with a Benq 1620 B7P9

Fuji TY G01 at 4X (the only speed selectable)
Printable TY G02 at 12 X
Platinum Ricoh R02 at 8X
The 4th one is a coaster: Verbatim Pastel TY G01 which used to perform very right. I'll check for possible mechanical damage (or rot ?)
5th is the quality scan of the first burn

So far I'm happy with the -R burning quality at this stage of firmware development. The Nec 2500A does somewhat better though burning TY G01 at 8X with as much or fewer PI's.

The R02 scan is now right with the benq (PI max was constantly exceeding 300 when burned with the Nec 2500 and scanned on the Liteon 811S) but quick Q Scan recommends only 4X for this media even though 16X is selectable. I settled for 8X and passed.

Just Picked up a BenQ 1620 today. Flashed to latest RPC1 firmware. Here's my first Burn. It's only 4.3G, though it gives a pretty good indication of what the drive can do. According to Nero it hit 12X around half way through the burn.

Verbatim Printable 8X +R (MCC003), Burned at 12X. Tranfer rate test with NEC3500 because it's faster.

Very Impressed so far. Hopefully the drive can keep it up.

Just got the IO magic 16x today. It's a BenQ OEM (the sticker on the burner said BenQ DW1620). Directly flashed to RPC B7P9 and made a 8x burn with MAG F01.

Seems "okay" to me But how do I bump the scan speed up? I already set it to Max, but it takes waaaay to long to scan.

douglam, what version of CD-Speed are you using? Maybe it will help if you upgrade to the latest version.

I found something odd in the QScans I ran on my Fuji Taiyo Yudens. They are the +R 8x variety and QScan found them not suitable for burning at anything faster than 4x. Massive tracking errors near the end of the disks.

I didn't quite believe this, so I tried one at 8x and my Nero Speed scan and quality check turned out pretty well. 97 on the quality score.

Burned on an I/O Magic 16x drive converted to BenQ 1620 with the latest firmware.

In post # 277 above I posted a scan of a TY G01 looking like a coaster .

After checking, it was caused by a beautiful fat finger print in the moddle of the disc.
After wiping out the finger print, I re-did a scan with the following good result.

Another comment on -R burning with the Benq : it's just fine, my Nec 2500 can do slightly better though, the weak compartment bein overspeed not quality (TY G01 and Ritek G04 only qualify for 4X whereas Ricoh +R for example is burnt @8X flawlesslly).

Here is a Maxell +R 8x disk burned at 8x. Doesn't seem as good as the TY I burned earlier at this speed.

My first burn on a Nutech ddw163 flashed to Benq 1620 with B7M9.
The first is with some cheap no name 4x dvd+r.
The second with some cheap Bulkpaq 4x dvd+r. Don't know what happened on the second burn. That's horrible.

Hi, I'm a newbie, and I find it difficult to understand all these media tests...

I just bought a BenQ 1620 (yesterday evening), updated it with the latest firmware, and I'd like to know wich medium will give me the best quality (speed doesn't matter a lot ). In my local stores, I see usually the following brands : Verbatim, Philips, Sony, Traxdata, TDK, Fuji, Memorex.

Wich one should I take, in these different categories :

- CD : ...
- CD-RW : ...
- DVD-R : ...
- DVD+R : ...
- DVD-RW : ...
- DVD+RW : ...
- DVD DL (+ or - ?)

Thank you for your advices

Take a look at http://www.nomorecoasters.com/

Excellent media info and, about 1/3 of the way down, there is a Branding Guide section. Remember, this is only a guide, but it is a damn good one!

I am trying to do media test on my new BenQ 1620. I am running CD-DVD speed v3.55 and it will not do quality test faster than 1X eventhough I picked 4X. Any suggestions?
