Philips DVDR1648 is a rebadged BenQ DW1640.
Philips DVDR1660 is a rebadged BenQ DW1650.

Both are good drives but I would go with the latest (Philips 1660).

We have to remember, BenQ DW1650 (and Philips DVDR1660) is the same as DW1655 except for missing LS hardware/capability.
DW1655 review here.

Both drives are very good. But I will suggest you to get the newer, which is the 1660!!

Well, you might also consider buying the Benq 1650 - same hardware, especially if you need some software, which is normally bundled with retail packages.

In former times Philips has bundled full featured Nero Burning Rom instead of the crippled Nero Express, which is favoured by the competitors.
Today, I had the opportunity to have a look at the package of the retail version in a local store. I was shocked: A Logo on the box states "Nero 6 DEMO bundled" (DEMO set in capital letters by me). So, the software package is absolutely useless, I would have paid the higher price compared to the Benq becaus of the better software. But now they can keep their stuff.

Yes, according to the review [of the 1655]. However, I tried overburning a DVD+R disc on my BenQ 1650 and ended up with a failed burn. Probably I did something wrong there

Yes it can overburn, though your success is related to disc quality.

Go for the 1660. I just had a 1640 RMA swapped for a 1660 (and also have the 1650) and they are both better drives than the 1640. In fact, you can improve the Philips 1660 by crossflashing it to the Benq 1650 firmware.

Thanks for your answers
What are the advantages of flashing it with the benq 1650 firmware (can I go back after that using the philips firmware?)?
I would prefer the benq, but I can't find it here in Portugal...Only the Philips recorder ( at 39 euros)

Yes you can go back if you use the BQ Flasher both ways.

As a Benq 1650, your drive will give you faster reading, better error reporting in scans, more options in QSuite to give you control over the drive's features and diagnostic tests. Also Benq issue new firmware more frequently than Philips.
