BenQ / Philips Writer Discuss, New BenQ scanning???? at CD, DVD and Blu-ray Writers forum; I had a Phillips crossflashed to a BenQ dw1650, but received my new genuine BenQ 1650. I installed the new 1650 and burned a disc and then scanned it. I don't understand why the genuine 1650 scans with constant dropouts in the reading and the jitter rate is all over.

Try another firmware, muscles. I've never owned a 1650 but the 1655 will start/stop during scanning with certain firmwares. Flash to an earlier version and see what happens

It is the same firmware as my crossflahed one and the crossflashed one doesn't do it the whole way thru the scan, only one stall towards the beginning.

Yeah, I know, you said that before. Sometimes flashing to an earlier FW like BCDC ( one a lot of 1650 owners prefer) then re-flashing cures the problem. Can't hurt to try

I bought this BenQ dw1650 on ebay about a month ago and just installed it today. It said NEW and did look and was packaged like new. The seller was BCOM online store. Has anyone had any experience with these people and do you think my 1650 is bad? Out of two disks I've burned with this one, only one plays.

What burning software did you use? Did you use BQFlasher flasher to crossflash your drive? Some have had better results using the WinDWFlash program with the cvt firmwares.

This 1650 I did not crossflash, it was my older Philips drive that I crossflashed. This is a genuine 1650. I was using 1click for backing up my movies.

Use Imgburn to burn your dvd discs and you'll have no problems in playing back the discs.

    1. rip with dvdfab decrypter
    2. use dvd shrink to compress files and create a iso image
    3. then use imgburn to burn the iso image to a dvd disc.

Try that method and see if you still can't playback the disc. Are you still using TY T02 media or are you using another media?

First of all muscles4life thats nothing to worry about and the burn (post #1) looks great.

    Not to get confused what been posted above (that burning application has anything to do with it), but this "scan-dip" behaviour is common on BenQ DW1650/1655 drives. I can't explain why (think nobody here can), I'll just add a "good" explanation by DrageMester posted here ;
    Quote:
If the scan speed-dips occur at all on a drive, there will always be at least one dip even at lower scanning speeds, both from my own experience, but also according to other BenQ owners at CDFreaks.

How many dips you get depends on many factors, one being the media, and another one being seemingly random - one scan of a disc can have 11 dips and the next scan of the same disc (even without ejecting the disc) can have only 1 dip.

It's probably what they consider humour at the BenQ firmware department! .

I'd just like to add that since I made that post, I have in fact had a few scans without even a single dip, but never at speeds faster than 8x CAV and these dip-less scans have been very rare.

look at the jitter rate though, thats terrible. Could the jitter only be bad because of the dips?

Anything below 10% is very good.

Yes, looks like jitter spikes are just at "dip" points.

Try scanning at 6x. I have one 1650 that has the drops every 135mb and it's much better at 6x.

I have it on at all times on my BenQ DW1655 and I have never seen an improvement by turning it off. I have seen some horrible burns when turning off WOPC, however.

    Others may have different experiences.

For Yuden + and - and Verbatim +, I keep WOPC off. For other discs, I test to see what is best.

If I scan at anything less than 8x, it only dips once at the beginning. This scan was at 6x and looks good. I have WOPC on and am confused by the replies if I should leave it on. I always see people scan at 8x and 4x, but not 6x, just wondering if it's a good scan speed for the 1650?

That seems a good burn, so whatever you are doing must be working. People have different experiences with WOPC and Solidburn. I suggest you experiment to find out what is best with your drive and your system.
