New BenQ DW1655 firmware BCIB released: support and discussion thread

BenQ / Philips Writer Discuss, New BenQ DW1655 firmware BCIB released: support and discussion thread at CD and DVD Writers forum; kolos This burn of a TY G03 is awesome ! Maybe, like with BCHB, the support for TY 16X media is the prominent characteristic of this firmware and hopefully, unlike with BCHB, it is not given at the cost of bizarre behaviour burning other media. __________________ Benq 1620 B7W9 (retired)

First I was very disappointed with TY G03 and my NEC 4551, which burns significantly better TY T02, MCC 004 and MCC 03RG20 media. With NEC I get PIE values around 140.000 and PIF around 4.000 and I have another problem called "2,2 and 3,8GB PIE and PIF spike", which limits my burning speed to 8x. 'Cause that I decided to get another decent burner, which can burn at 12x and 16x. I knew that BenQs are very good so I decided to get one. Unfortunately in my country BenQs are very rare and in this forum I saw that a Philips 1668 is the same as BenQ 1655, so here I am with my Philips@BenQ . This is my first burn with it and already better then all my NEC's . Now I'm only a little confused about all these settings in QSuite .

Hi kolos

I saw you got great result leaving SB and OS at their default settings (SB for known media and OS off) and as you seem to have only 16X media, I would recommend that you continue with the same settings.
SB was reported to get confused after a few burns beginning with BCHB. The situation is unclear yet with BCIB. Anyway, it would slow down the burn by some 20 seconds in the best case.

Thank you for explanation. I saw here (FW BCHB) very good burn (PIF!) with SB on, so I think it's worth of trying.

So in your opinion what is the best 1655 firmware? Is BenQ 1655 riplocked or not? Can MCSE 1.0.9.1 increase reading speed with BCIB?

I decided to try BCIB again because I am not getting very good burns
with Sony16D1 on my other drives, they look much better on the BenQ.

You can increase readspeed a little with MCSE, ie 16X instead of 12X on DL disks, if you think it worthwhile.
BCDB is very good (so is BCGB, search the forum for a link to this one) but if you burn mostly TY 16X media you could give BCIB a try.

MegaDETH, what SB/WOPC settings did you use on the Sony media? I'd guess SB was on for both known and unknown?

MegaDETH, that's a good burn. I'm also settled with BCIB since I don't have any problem so far. In BCHB I got slowdown problem but not in BCIB. Also I cannot reproduce other users problem with BCIB, one thing I recalled was a problem using MCC004 MII with very specific SB/WOPC settings. We don't have MCC004 MII by Moser Baer anyway here in the US.

I also feel that the reading performance of BCIB is a little better than previous firmwares. This means it affects high speed reading as well as scanning. It seems now that the BCIB is more tolerant with media burned with other drives and many of it scans are comparable with Liteon 165P6S scans, especially 4x CLV. That said, MegaDETH, it would be interesting to see a scan of that burn in 4x CLV. I'm guessing the small PIE mountain at the end of the disc from a 8x CAV will not be shown in 4x CLV, or at least they are the same level throughout the disc. I know it's not the forum standard but just for research purpose.

Or possibly 6x CLV as well. That's what I've been using almost exclusively in my 1640 since it was introduced in CD-DVD Speed, results are usually in pretty close agreement to my 4x Liteon CLV scans, regardless of what drive the discs were burned in. I don't know whether the PI levels will lower towards the edge or not, although I would not be suprised. BTW, I tend to see more differences in comparing 4x and 8x Liteon scans on my 160P6S than I do comparing 4x/6x/8x scans in my Benq.

Related question - do the speed spikes when running disc quality tests exist with BCIB? I'll be getting a 1655 Monday and that was one of the headaches of later 1640 FWs, the stupid speed spikes.

Thanks for the confirmation scoobiedoobie. I found that my 1655 with BCIB is consistent scanning at 4x CLV and 8x CAV as well (I haven't tried 6x CLV much). I have tested few discs scanning multiple times at 4x CLV and 8x CAV, will show them if I have time to compile a thread.

My 1655 with BCIB don't have the multiple speed spikes like I see in some of the scans here. I'm guessing it's not the firmware or the drive, more likely there's a hardware or software interfering during the scan? Also in some occasions, there is no single dip at all when scanning at 8x CAV.

My BenQ 1655 with BCIB always has at least one speed dip, and sometimes it has multiple dips. There's no discernable pattern to this behaviour - even with the same disc one scan can have just a single dip and another scan can have multiple dips, even without removing the disc from the drive between scans.

It's just one of those unexplainable things, I guess...

zevia and DrageMester,

We all keep an eye on your reports, mods ;-)

Do you, DrageMester, still experience that "...Rabbit" (can't remember the name) effect since with BCIB firmware ?

I don't get any More Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog burns, because I don't use the combination of media+settings that produce those results (why would I?). The Killer Rabbit has appeared every time I have burned using that combination of fw/media/settings, however, even with two different batches of media and two different drives.

The combination that produces those results are: Firmware BCHB/BCIB with SolidBurn Enabled (for known media) and WOPC disabled on Verbatim 16x DVD+R (MCC 004) Made in India media.

IIRC someone else got the same results with Verbatim 16x DVD+R (MCC 004) Made in Taiwan media, but many others do not.

Many thanks, Dragemester, for the detailed answer.

I now will give BCIB a try in my box :-)
I don't have MII MCC 004 and rarely disable WOPC.

I'm receiving some MCC 003 on Monday, darn courier was about to deliver them yesterday and because of probs at their depot failed to do so!
I was drooling with anticipation of trying different SB/OS/WOPC combos on those over the weekend, now I just have to wait... This media also overburned very well in the past, I can't wait to see if I can break my personal best of 4690MB! All this could have happened today... Intial City Link sucks!

Hello :-)

I must say I am following this thread with great exitement, since I have just bought a DW1655 - and eager to find out which firmware is the best. Not received the 1655 yet though, but now I'll only have to wait a few days. Too bad that the 1655 is almost impossible to buy in the US now! Thats what I have heard........

Keep posting :-) .

Kent.

Kent, velkommen til CDFreaks! / welcome to CDFreaks!

I suggest you keep the current firmware on the drive until you're sure the drive is working OK, and then you can always upgrade to the firmware that you think suits your needs best, whether that's BCIB or some other firmware.
