This is not the case. The fact is that only with BCDC I can burn MCC 004 media at 12x. With BCFC and BCHC, although selecting the burning speed at 12x (with SB on), I got only 4X.

It seems that one of the purposes of BCIC was to fix that. But it fails to do it.

My 1650 came with BCFC installed, which I used for a while before trying BCHC and then going all the way back to BCDC. After experimenting with BCIC for a couple of days, I'm starting to think maybe BCFC might be the overall best of the lot for my uses. But there are probably a few more flashes left before I decide.

@ Gordon Banks: I'd lose sleep at night if I didn't try out a new f/w. Individual burners differ even within a single model number. Something that may not work so well for others could be exactly what you've been waiting for.

Can't we pass this info on to the LiteOn representative, since (from what I have heard anyway) LiteOn now owns BenQ's drive division??

I'll keep waiting for the next release.

imo, actually you should at least give it a spin.

Each burner does not burn exactly the same way and a new firmware might suit one more than another. I have a DW1620 which just plainly refused to burn beyond 12x with the B series of firmware till I flashed it with the latest E firmware.

PS: the BCIB firmware did improve MCC004 burns for my set.

First comparison between my former BCDC and new BCIC. As it's a comparison between firmwares and not a media/burn quality report, I use my usual 12X scanning speed.

Sadly, this comparison is not with premium media (that's the least to say) and not an image file (I always get less PIFs when burning images, go figure why, as I have no buffer problems). More comparisons upcoming with better media (when I have something to burn )

CMCMAG E01, Datasafe printable, 8X, SB OFF / WOPC ON / NERO data disc

1. BCDC
2. BCIC (scanned with BCDC to rule out possible f/w reading variation)

Lower jitter, lower PIF total with BCIC. Good start.

Lower Jitter and PIF?

Have you seen my post about scanning variations using the same drive and firmware?

I think you're concluding too much from just those two scans. To my eyes those could be identical results with a little scanning variation on top.

I think you're concluding too much (about my conclusions) from just my "good start" input.

Of course! I'll wait for a trend in my scans before drawing conclusions!

Uh? You mean ECC? If I remember well, @16X in the Benq it's 1.28. I'll check that.

Here is some QScan results using the DW1650 with BCIC firmware... haven't seen any others but these seem pretty good.

First is Taiyo Yuden TYG02 media:

Second is Verbatim MCC 003 media:

Haven't burnt anything with this burner yet cos I've only had it in for about 30 mins but its looking pretty good. Will go well with my older LG-4163B... did have a NEC-3520A but that is crap, much happier with this BENQ

So, after this first testing round I would guess my BenQ likes the new BCIC!!

It is the first firmware with which I can burn my Verbatim MCC004 (Made in India) @12x with such great results.
With former firmware I usually got jitter at about 12% and much higher PIE and PIF.

I just regret that I didn't waited for TDB RPC-1 firmware before flashing, because now I don't want to do a reflash again....everything works great!

Quote:
Release Reason (1650 BCIC):
1. Updated the writing strategy
2. Improved Power Calibration Judegment.
To the changelog:
Before flashing the new f/w, I noticed tollowing effect:
Every 10-15 seconds the drive produced some high-frequent noise and the buffer fluctuated and the burn-speed was reduced. I think there are the wopc-points.
With the new f/w, the noise happens less often, maybe 10-15 times during the whole burning-process, and the buffer doesn't struggle that much too...

Hey Francksoy (Hi ). So where is the next comparison?

Also, are you burning and scanning (and re-flashing BCDC/BCIC) using the same drive?
