| My BenQ DW1655 getting slower
Help. I have a BenQ DW1655 DVD re-writer with light scribe for 2.5 years now. I keep updating its firmware till the last 1 which is BCIB. All was going well till about 9 months ago when I got 50 BenQ 16x DVD-R. I started to get writing errors when I used them, so I checked Qsuite & used Qscan & found the recommended speed to be 8x. Since that speed gave me no errors I paid no attention & kept using it & thought the blanks my not be of good quality. ![]() I started to be suspicious when I tried other media (sony, samsung, imation, verbatim...) & found that the recommended speed is 8x never more, but sometimes 4x ok too, others not. ![]() 2 months ago, I found writing errors when burning a DVD-R of the same stock I got at 8x as usual, I resorted to Qsuite & found the recommended speed dropped to 4x. but burning with 4x till today is still working fine. ![]() Shock came to me yesterday when my daughter wanted me to burn her few MP3 songs for her discman, I put the CD, got the songs list & started burning as usual at 48x, then I kept hearing the whirring sound of the CDspeeds & slows for few seconds then Error Message came indicating that it can't write to device. ![]() ![]() I tried Nero (7 premium) & Ashampoo 8, even windows drag & drop, all failed. I tried Disc At Once & Track At Once, only difference is DAO fails from the start but TAO fails before completion of 1st track. It only worked when I chose speed of 12x (slowest) to burn the CD. ![]() By the way, all writing simulations works great with no errors at max speeds. I sent the problem to BenQ support but their answer was very funny : they told me to take my "LCD display" to their service center !!! Any one got a solution, help or a clue ??? I like this burner & don't wanna change it. Thanks.

| Re: My BenQ DW1655 getting slower You could reflashing the firmware, but alas nothing lasts forever. You could also try clearing the eephrom with QSuite 2.1.

| Re: My BenQ DW1655 getting slower Thank you all. I reflashed the firmware, cleaned the eephrom. Tried burning CD & DVD. I burned the CD at 48x, it worked but kept spinning & clicking softly for 3 minutes then burning started & completed successfuly. I burned 2 16x DVD at 8x (qsuite recomenede 12x or less) with no trouble. Thanks but do you think the problem is solved for the CDs or I must burn at slower speeds?? Any other suggestions too? Thanks a million. |

| Re: My BenQ DW1655 getting slower Your drive might be toast or the lens might need cleaning. BCIB is however the most problematic firmware for the BenQ DW1655 in my experience (with BCHB a close second), so you might try flashing BCDB or BCGB instead.

| Re: My BenQ DW1655 getting slower I use BCGB and I know some others use BCDB. Decide on one or flip a coin.

| Re: My BenQ DW1655 getting slower Tried the CD burning,... 48x & even 24x failed.... only 12x works with CDs 8x with DVDs By the way, I'm having trouble I don't know if related or not couple a months ago, I installed (sigh ) Nero 9 (I had Nero 7 on my PC & was fine), it messed all things up so I uninstalled it but the Autoplay menu was messed up with lots of "error" along with "open with media player" etc...I used the Nero cleaning tools but "ERROR" still there, so I uninstalled Nero 7, used the cleaning tool, Installed 7 again, all fine but... I lost "open, search, explore" from my DVD context menu when I put CD or DVD in it (but shows when nothing in it!!!), also the autoplay for music files & blank CD are totally empty.... is there any relation ?? also, How can I fix this ??? Thanks a lot for your time, effort & help |

| Re: My BenQ DW1655 getting slower For music CDs, you shouldn't burn any faster than 16x. That's the safe sweet spot for all modern DVD burners when burning CD media. Second, I have a suggestion, why don't you reflash the drive back to BCIB, and then I want you to run the QSuite program, and I want you to look under the SolidBurn tab, and then I want you to set it to OFF for both known and unknown media. Then, save the setting, and when it asks how you want to make the change, either temporary or permanent, click on PERMANENT. Then clear your learned media. Now go and burn again. BTW, BenQ no longer exists. They were completeley absorbed by Lite-On a couple of years ago. You can't contact them anymore for support with your drive, so don't bother. |

I'll try another CD to see if it'll keep going so or drop to 12x again as before. Quote:
Fine, but what about their site ?? I agree with you that their answer was unrelated to my problem as if no one read it.... Thanks for your help & will keep you updated.

| Re: My BenQ DW1655 getting slower The site is simply for legacy downloads of firmware and software. That's it. No more support. No one who works at Lite-On now knows anything about the older BenQ drives. Let it go. And as I said before, stop trying to burn CDs at such high speeds. You should make most burns at 16x, or maybe 24x at the fastest. |
