And when finiished MKM-001 will be listed while MKM 003 turns into MKM 0x1. And I do the same for the row that lists 8x, 6x, 4x, and 2.4x
Is that correct?
Almost . The steps you described are correct to swap the strategy, and that is what matters for you.
The internal details are as follows: MKM 001 changes to MKM 0x1, so this strategy is not taken anymore when using MKM 001 media. MKM 003 is renamed to MKM 001, so the MKM 003 strategy is taken when burning MKM 001. This double rename is done automaticaly to make the swap easier.

Looks like the same goes for all 164* firmwares, both internal and external.
I'm sure ala42 will fix this soon.

ala42 youll have to forgive my infinite noobness on this subject but i cant seem to get it right.

* I flashed the 1655 with the latest firmware
* I opened MCSE with the provided update
* I loaded the latest firmware (i think thats the file that loads all the Media Types)
* I clicked on mkm001, and Media Name / Ext. / Rev opened up for editing
* I then typed in mkm003 in Media Name for both mkm001 fields
* Clicked save in MCSE

For some reason i must have missed a step or something....as i said im a noob in this department as ive never even flashed a drive to update firmware. could you just clarify that im doing all the right steps? thanks again bro for all your help....

Start MCSE.
Load the 1655 firmware.
Double click MKM001 2.4x, and select MKM 003 2.4x in the window that opens, press ok.
Double click MKM001 2.4-8x, and select MKM 003 2.4-8x in the window that opens, press ok.
Save the firmware and flash it.

thank you ala42 for your work one the MCSE, i own a 1620, 1655, nec 3540, and ( I know) BTC 1016IU. i read that the MCSE support the 1016, but is it only the internal version? because i can't seem to get the firmware A089 loaded.
I woul like to tinker with that drive a bit, since i got the 1655 the BTC has been a paper weight.

thanks in advance

I have checked the A091 firmware a few days ago and it works fine. To get the firmware binary, start the flasher and while it is running, open windows explorer, go to %windir%\temp, which typicaly is c:\windows\temp. In a directory named PA*.tmp.DIR you will find A091.HEX, which can be used with MCSE.

I have no read speed patch for BTC firmwares, so the box is greyed out. MCSE saves the modified firmware as .bin file. I do not know if it is possible to flash a BTC drive over USB. For infos on how to flash a BTC .bin firmware, check the FAQ or the threads in the BTC forum.

thanks again.

Save the firmware and flash it.

well i did everything and whats funny is i think it worked....however i still cant get a dl to burn faster than 2.4x using dvdd. i set the write speed to 8x and right after it starts it says this:

I 23:50:17 Destination Device: [1:0:0] BENQ DVD LS DW1655 BCDB (E: (ATA)

I 23:50:17 Destination Media Type: DVD+R DL (Disc ID: MKM-001-00) (Speeds: 2.4x, 4x, 6x, 8x)

this should mean i can burn at any of these speeds right?
but i sat there for 48 min and not once did it go faster than 2.4x

hey chef not sure what DMA or PIO is, but ill have to look tht up later....

upon writing another disc this is what dvdd said after i set write speed to 8x

I 00:28:41 Operation Successfully Completed! - Duration: 00:38:23
I 00:28:41 Average Write Rate: 3,642 KB/s (2.6x) - Maximum Write Rate: 5,579 KB/s (4.0x)

so apparently it went slightly faster by average of .2x (2.6x) very odd....

As chef said, you need to check and make sure DMA is inabled.
That is VERY important.

Well I swapped the stragies but when burning those Verbatim discs the speed is all over the place after about halfway. the 1640 didn't drop down in speed. I'll have to try a couple more to see what those do. Is there any way to get the write strategy from the 1640 to the 1655.

Could you be a bit more precise ?

Ala42, when I change the TYG02 name into TYG01 name on BSOB, the writing speed is still on 4x.
also, QSuite 2.1 reported that 1640 support TYG01, but the strategy never appeared on MCSE with BSxB firmware strategy list.
If QSuite reported that 1640 support TYG01, why MCSE not showing the strategy?

thank you

You'll have to import TYG01 over TYG02.
Haven't tested this myself with TYG01 media, but at least you can try.

Fire up DVD Identifier with TYG01 disc in your drive. Identify and open leaf "Media Code Block".
Start MCSE, open BSOB file and highlight TYG02, push Import, press OK. Next window opens, now copy media block (from DVD Identifier) and paste to this window, press OK. Now press Set.
Easy like that.

Note though, if you have SolidBurn enabled you might still be limited from burning at full speed depending on media, but you will always have opportunity to choose "old" burn speeds.

BTW, why not try to import TYG01 over TYG03. High quality Yuden media is able to burn good at 12x speed with SB and WOPC disabled.

This TYG01@TYG02 problem was already reported earlier. TYG01@TYG03 works fine.
